I am going to buy a new pickup truck. I will be using this truck for work and want to keep it for several years 150k+.
This truck will be a regular cab 4x4 long bed.
I either want a Ram 2500 w/hemi, Chevy 2500hd 6.0, or a Ford f250 5.4. Which would you recommend as a work truck. I am proably going with the manaul tranny to save a grand and the reliablity issue.

The ford is by far the cheapest. Heck i could proably get the f250 with a powerstroke for the same price as the other 2 trucks but i really don't think i need a desil.

So what do you guys think?

If you want a nice work truck that wont take a dump on you, then buy the Ford. You wont regret it.

At 150,000 miles the powerstroke will just be getting broke in!! Those things will run forever and the ride is incredible. The heartbeat of America is valve knockin! You cant go wrong with the Ford. There is a reason they are the best selling truck for 26 staight years. Yes, I work there.

Get a Chevy/GMC with the duramax diesel and Allison tranny. They work great for a work truck. Some of our GMC parts trucks (which get overloaded and driven like they are stolen on a daily basis) have over 400K miles on them.

We're fixin to have a pissin contest boys....that's all this post is going to amount to and we all know it.

Personally, I would only get in a Ford to set it to Neutral and push it off a cliff, Dodge's are acceptable, but Im a die hard Chevy fan. We own 3 Chevys and a dodge.

My truck has 175 K on it and has not let me down yet. :D

haha 175k my 1990 chevy shortbox regular cab has 290k on it. no problems. im deciding between an 99/00 f-250 powerstroke or a slightly older model 96/97 chevy z71 diesel, and do a solid front axle swap and lift. either way the truck is gettin lifted and get 39 inch tires. man i can't wait to work on the oil rigs or be a logger. money money money

If you have the money for the powerstroke diesel, that's what I'd go for.

Diesel's last MUCH longer, get better gas mileage, and the fuel is cheaper. Plus you'll have all the power you'll ever need for anything. The only drawback to the diesel is the price, but if you got the money, go for it.

If not, then I'd stick with either a Chevy or Ford. Personally, I would go with the Chevy 2500HD. A friend of mine has one and they are VERY nice trucks. I think (not positive though) the Chevy's get the best gas mileage also.

Thats what we have,,,and you guys know that youcan express your opinions on which truch is best without slamming the other brands....Striker looks like you wanted it to turn into a pissing contest, i really think we could keep it from chevy sucks fordsuck etc. i dont think mrusk wants to hear people bashing trucks, he just wants some info on whats best..i dont know a whole lot about trucks so im not just going to jump in and defend ford because we have a couple. i do know we have 1 f250 (7.3) that has lasted through alot of crap and is still runningi dont know how many miles is on it but i think 150k, its just a couple years old....no motor probs yet....i like fords, but maybe thats because ive never drove any other trucks. i would take any of those trucks though

We have 2 ford f-350's. My dad has his 2000 f-350 with the powerstroke deisel. He absolutley runs the living hell outta that truck, whether it be pulling a huge load of christmas trees on a gooseneck trailer, just making a quick trip to michigan, or his winter snowplow routes. We got 10" of snow twice this year and this truck was unstopable. No problems what-so-ever to this point. I think there's 65k miles on it

I have an f-250 CC PSD & a 67 Mustang, so I am heavily biased towards Ford, but whatever you get, buy a diesel, especially if you'll ever tow anything with it. All three manufacturers make kick arse diesels. Like striker said, it is really just a pissin' match as all 3 have their pros & cons, but a diesel is the way to go. Plus diesel is cheaper (in most places) & you'll get better mileage from it, especially once it gets broken in (at around 60,000 miles)

We have a chevy 2500 4x4 reg cab with a long bed . It also has the 6.0 engine and it is a really nice truck. The engine is great for pulling loads and runs great. If i was going to get a truck it would definately be another 6.0 chevy.

I have both a 2000 Ford F-350 and a 2002 Chevy 2500HD. The Ford has the V10 and the Chevy has the 6.0. Both are used for work and have similar mileage of around 12,000 miles. The Ford has visited the dealer several times and came back with a 3 page parts list of warranty work. It also came with crap General tires that have already worn out and been replaced. The frame and dump body frame are also already rusting even though they got a rust preventive coating. The Chevy has went to the dealer once and has been much better since. The paint scratches easily and the interior squeaks.

Both are nice trucks but hopefully no more problems are had with the Ford especially once it gets out of warranty. I have never owned a Dodge and have been happy with the Fords and Chevy's I have owned in the past. I have no experience with diesels.

Well we own a dodge 2500, and i've drove both of the other 2 mentioned trucks. The ford was my least favorite, seemed to have a gutless motor, but it did ride the best. The chevy/GMC truck is a excellent truck motor seems very responsive but when pulling a trailer the truck seemed to get pushed around a bit to much for my likings. Our dodge is my favortie, could be due cuz i've drove it the most, but i can throw a trailer on it, 4 quads and a bed full of gear and run 85 w/o a problem, the trailer doesn't seem to push it around as much either. It is a 98 with the 360 5.9L in it so i can't say much for the new ones. Other then my cuz bought a new 02, 5.4 4x4 and has mucho problems with it. I would have know problem driving any of them though

DODGE.........OH YAAAAAAAAAA

The Ram 2500 w/hemi is an awsome truck, power is awsome! I was going to be getting the 2500 but we need 3 vehicles and we couldnt manage getting rid of our Jeep and taking on a new truck, and another vehicle. New for new I will take the Dodge every time! I will never buy a Ford, Chevy (GM) are good too. I am just a die hard dodge fan, like my HONDA disease... :p test drive them, I dont know a single Dodge truck that wont spin the tires no problem :D

If you've got a hankering for a diesel spend the dough for a real one.. ;) The Cummins in the 03 Rams with the common rail fuel system is as quiet as they come.. Get it with the 6-spd, nothings gonna touch it. Figure on ~15mpg empty, or ~15mpg towing anything you can hitch to the truck. The front suspension is MUCH improved over the previous 2500/3500 trucks (more precise, less wander)..

With the Germans bashing heads at Chrysler QC has improved 1000% it's amazing to see the difference 2 years has made.

Heck, they are all good trucks now.. and they should be when your plopping down $30k+ for one :D

On the "Trucks" show on TNN this weekend they did some dyno testing with a new Chevy duramax. They did a baseline pull of 195hp (at the wheels) and a lot of torque, i forget how much, somewhere in the 400+ ft lbs. range. They then added propane injection, nitrous oxide, a ECU reprogram and an exhaust. They did it again and ripped off like 450hp and 7XX ft.lbs! Now THATS what i need to tow my trailer. haha
Only problem is all those bottles to refill...
