How much more powerful is a 250ex than a Recon? A 250ex is most likely to be the next addition to our quad stable replacing the Bayou 220 for my 12 year old son to ride. I love the Recon but it doesn't have enough speed or suspension to keep up with my Z-400. The kid is old enough and big enough now to go with Dad on "boys day out" rides so it's upgrade time!
Still considering the just released Z-250 but leaning towards the 250ex at this point. Any input would be appreciated!:D

Its not that much more powerful than the Recon. The 02 Recons actually have the same motor as the 250. The only difference is the slight weight and gearing. The Recon will top out at around 47 while the 250 will top out at approx 53. The 250 is very reliable and a good bike for the young kids in the 12-14 year range. The bike is very easy to wheelie when need be and yet it doesnt have to much power so it will not get away from the kid.

If you wasnt so far away and could wait til July I would sell you mine!

Well, when they first come out they took the Recon motor and got like 20% more power out of it or something so the following year they took the stronger motor and replaced the previous Recon motor in the 02 models. So now the 250ex and Recon have the same motors. :)

If hes 12 you shoud consider a 300ex or Blaster. The 250 is allright but he will grow out of it fast.

Yeah. If he has a 220 Bayou now you might want to think about investing in a bit of a bigger quad so he does not grow out of it nearly as fast as he would the 250. Plus you can always throw several aftermarkets on the 300 and make it a mean machine unlike the 250. :)

Well, I thought about going with a 300ex but Mom may ride it too so that rules out a manual clutch. Top speed is not a big factor for me, can't use top speed in the woods! Whoops, rutted trails, sand pits riding is what we do. The Recon will beat you to death when riding hard and is not too sand pit friendly power wise. When I feel he is ready to step up I'll give him my Z-400 and get Hondas killer 400ex replacement for myself! :D Zero to 35 mph and suspension/handling is what I'm looking for. I love the way the Recon is made and designed and of course the reliability of a Honda. But the Recon is still a utility and has its limitations on sport riding situations. I guess a better way to ask is how does a 250ex stack up suspension wise to say a 300ex, Lakota etc.? Whatchya'll think??:eek2:

Personally, I think the 250 suspension isnt that great. Actually, there isnt much difference between it's and the Recon...well, it deosnt feel like it anyways. It does handle good for its size so that shouldnt be a problem. But if you do alot of rough riding then the 250 will wear you out alot faster than the 300 will and once the suspension heats up bad on the 250...the shox make it feel like youre riding a rock. :huh
