12-18-2001, 09:57 AM
should I take out the spark arrestor on my stock 400ex?
I was told it will be alot louder with not much of a gain in power.
so is it worth it?
I dont have any place to go ride today or Id foind out for myself.

I took mine out, back when I had stock exhaust. It is louder, but I did notice some power gains in the mid range. It is only 3 bolts so it is not a big to change.

It'll sound somewhat like a helacopter

my friend did this on his 400. he didn't take the endcap off he actually cut out the spark arrestor and put the cap back on. it sounds sweet! a lot better than with the whole cap off. it sounds better than some aftermarket pipes i've heard even. not a whole lotta power gain though...

Yeah, and when cutting the spark arrestor out you can put the chrome cap back on so it looks half way decent.

cutting the spark arrestor out didn't seem to do jack for me, and there was no noise increase (end cap in place). so I reached in there & blew out the last exhaust baffle too. that seemed to let it flow a little better and increased the noise level. It is still quieter than any aftermarket pipe I have ever heard. check out gabe's page for more info. keep the end cap on.

I took mine off until I bought my exhaust and kabd69667
called it: it sounds like an annoying helicopter but it's got a little more pep to it without it. I thought about cutting out my spark arrestor but I need it occaisionally to ride at my uncle's, might wanna try both whenever you get a chance to ride.

I did this 2 my 250ex and sounded pretty cool. It madeit a little more responsive. It's good enough till you get a pipe. I just put a T-4 on my quad, it's sweet.

Hey all,
I cut the thing out and put the cap back on, it is louder but there is an increase in low too mid torque. My buddy has a stock exhaust and when we race I pull ahead every time. For a free mod it is a good one. The noise increase is not that bad for the power gain. Also if you do this mod lower your needle one notch this will help a bunch. for free you cant go wrong and if you don’t like it go to the dealer and buy a new one or weld your old on back in. I just cut mine out with a hack saw, took 5 minutes. But there is an increase in power.

Hey im running a 416 with a few mods, and i was thinking last night that i was gona turn my stock pipe into a shorty!
So i cut the end of it off, and now i was wondering how to get all the insides out?
I found what i thought where three welds, and drilled them out of it, and it still seems to be holding up, inside the chamber!
How free should i expect it to come out when i get the welds completley cut, the pipe is in really good shape and spent most of it life sitting in the attick (or some spelling like that)

talk about the archives................ok here goes.

the spark arrestor removal and or the baffle removel did ZERO for power or performance for me. However, the drilling of the airbox seemed to bring it to life.

My feeling is that noise maker exhausts do nothing more than that. Fact is, unless your name is Joe Dyno, the ONE hp gain from the noise maker isn't going to be enough for you to feel anyway. But it will be enough for your neighbors to hear just before they call the cops. As always............just my opinion.

took it out of my 250ex its just three bolts so if u feel its to loud its simple to put back in. it seemed like i got more snappier throttle response but only a tiny power gain. so just go for it

it sounds like crap when u just take it out

me and my buddys where playing around on the road with my quad. we clocked it at 105km/h. we decided to take the spark arrester out and take off the airbox lid. we did another run. it seemed to have more power at the bottom and mid range and we also picked up 5km's at the top.
