Hi, I have a new 400EX totally stock. I have a budget of about $300 to $350. What should my first mod(s) be that would give me the most bang for the budget?

I am sport rider that plans to spend most of my time in the desert, dunes or hills. Very little track. I already have a twist throttle on the way. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'f your looking for power, a slip on would be good. But IMO i'd say get a pair of non rezzy works steelers. They will alow you to ride a lot harder than you could with a pipe.

i would save some more money for some schocks or if you want more power i would go with a slip on and a fliter :)

This is my list in order :D
Skids (PRM Swingarm, Pro Armor Body)
Shocks (ELKA's)
Air Filter
Pipe (DMC is what I am thinking about)

Thats my main list, tires might be in there somewhere (I am hoping to get free, or almost free ones from my friend...)

i would say Shaved Front and Rear Fenders, Headlight Cover, Parking brake block off, Number Plates w/ Numbers, Clutch Lever Assembly, Bars, Bumper , grips, Pro Design Kill Switch, Tinner (GCD) Air Scoops, Polished stuff. It would make the quad look totally different for only about 300

im thinkin since you ride in dunes, and sounds like you dont get big air, you will need some more power for that sand. Pipe filter jet kit.:o

If you have worn out tire, def. get some new tires. PRM skids are also a really good idea.

Drill out the rivets that hold the warning stickers in place, then remove the warning stickers. :macho

some nice tires and wheels...or a slip on pipe with a k&n filter, or like the others said you wont regret saving for some nice shocks.

Ok shave your fenders if you don't ride in the mud, get some lower racier bars and some nerfs. Then get a K&n filter with outerware. And with the rest i'd get a pb blockoff and a bumper and some bigger jets for the extra air flow and easier starting.

Once your done with that and you get more money i'd put my money into some nice shocks or exhaust and after that your tires should be worn down most of the way and i'd get some new tires for what you plan on doing. Stock tires are pretty good for hill climing and dragging though.;)

After much thought about what was said here this is what I did:

WB E Series Exhaust
K&N Air Filter
Motion Pro Twist Throttle
Red Scott Grips
Sand Gecko rear tires w/rims

Yes, I'm WAYYYYY out of budget. I guess its bologna and macaroni for me for the rest of the month. Thanks for all your advice.

A rejet was not required for elevations of sea level to 3000 feet per WB tech support. The WB exhaust dose not include the header.

Nerfs & front bumber are planned for next month.

Hey, Anyone got ideas for next month?

When I get the WB header, I will need to rejet to a 124 per WB tech support. BTW, When I get the WB header, I will need to get a new WB exhaust as the WB exhaust for the stock EX400 header will not fit the WB header.

Sorry, I keep forgetting things. WB also told me that the 400EX Exhaust Kit (exhaust & header) is ratted at 96db out of the box. After time, it may be to loud for some ridding areas. He did tell me that if it became a problem I could start removing the discs in the exhaust but then I loose performance. If this was going to be a race only quad, it would not matter. Hmmmmm.......

Then you will just have to repack it.

Sorry Derek, what do you mean by "repack it." Is it cheaper to buy the guts of an exhaust then to replace it. Don't forget I live in a world where a printer cartage is 3/4 of the price of a new printer. :)

Derek

Yes...it is ALOT cheaper to replace the guts then buy a new silincer!!!

I think you guys are missing the point. Highlander is concerned about it being to loud to pass Cali's new sound laws. The E-series has disk that allow you to adjust the power range. Less disk for more bottom end (also quieter) More disk open it up and give you better top end (louder) You can run 6-7 disk and be quiet enough to pass, but you will have about the same power as stock. Another way some people go is with a Yoshi. With a yoshi you can use thier tec kit and get past the rangers then remove it in a flash and have a good power increase.:D
I think if you remove your airbox lid (free) buy a K&N and outerwares ($50-$60) and rejet about two sizes up ($5) It will help a lot for cheap. The next step is with a pipe. ($200-$500) it will be a differant (sp) bike.
After awhile (once a year or so) you do need to repack your silencer it gets louder.
Also you can get a 14 tooth front sprocker ($20) It will wind out faster and accelerate faster, you will lose about 5-7 mph on the top end but at least you can get all your 5th gear has to offer.
I hope this clears things up.
