Running an HMF slip-on with no airbox lid and a stock filter. Running a DynoJet kit with the clip on the 3rd groove per their directions with a DJ165 main. Had this quad out running great last week. Fire it up today to take it out and the d@mn thing won't run. You can start it up with the choke on and it will sit there and idle for a little bit but when the engine warms up it dies. If you set the carb on half choke it runs a little but then dies. The engine is good and hot now and I've got the choke completely off. It will start and it will stay running if I rev it over and over and over again and it will not stay idling no matter how high you set the throttle idle speed. It also acts like it's missing a little cause every now and then there's a little popping in the exhaust. And here's another strange thing, when the choke is off and the engine is hot and I'm revving it over and over to keep it running and I let off the throttle to see if it will idle it dies instantly. When I go to start it again it idles very high for 2-3 seconds and the stutters and dies...

I've got no clue what the story is. It was running great on Friday:(

Well I walked away from it for about 15 minutes and went back out and hit the button and it started right up and started idling with no problems. I drive it down this dead-end street adjacent to my house and pin it through all 5 gears and it's running great. I get back in the woods and punch the throttle in 3rd gear and it's flat on the top end. Stay in less than 3/4 throttle and it's running OK. Then out of nowhere it dies. It won't refire until I choke it and then it fires off and I flip the choke off and it idles. I start heading for home and I notice that in 1st gear when you punch the throttle the revs seem to hold a little long, doesn't do it in other gears. Get back out on the road and go balls out through 5 gears and it's OK again. Pull into my driveway and it dies out of nowhere again. Also, it seems to surge (RPM's are up and down) when in low gears and are just off idle.

I could scream I'm so mad...

Have you tore the carb apart and cleaned it in a while? Also check your fuel line and the vent hose coming out of your gas cap and make sure they are not plugged. Seems more like the vent line. ANd that is a pretty common thing.

probably just a little piece of chit in the carburator, id say just clean it out and if that wont work than i think pappy is right on.

Make sure your carb slide is operating properly, It sounds like what my 300ex used to do when my slide linkage would come undone.

Here's the verdict: DynoJet=POS....

Pulled the DynoJet needle and main adapter/jet. Put the stock needle back in on the 3rd groove, 3 turns out on the air screw and put the stock main back in (which was a 155 Keihin jet from Joe). Quad started right up and idled great. I ripped it around the yard and there were no problems. Blasted it down the street and chopped the throttle and this is what the plug looks like. How's this look to you guys? A little lean?

Yeah it looks a little lean.
Go up a little bit on it and you should be perfect.

Plug looks good from here Guy, but you can't really see down in where you should read them.

Plug color looks good to me. The 155mj should be pretty close, if you're concerned about it being to lean, try a 158.

Good Luck!

I'd say you're running poor after sending Harry your hard-earned cash only to have one of his monkeys port it and reassemble it incorrectly.

The head was returned from Trinity fully assembled and ready to bolt on. It was bolted on and started only to find out a Trinity greasemonkey didn't put the locks on the valves correctly and 3 of the 4 valves decided they wanted to dance on the piston face.
