Whats up with my airbox?

I took off my airbox lid on my 88 250x expecting to feel some kind of increase in performance. Instead i felt like I was bogging down when I hammered the throttle. Was the problem too much air? If so could I turn up my idle? Or is there something else that I am not considering.Thanks in advance

increase your main jet up 1 size. Possibly 2. You introduced an increase in air, but left the main jet the same. You need to do both.

HOW DIFFICULT IS THIS TO DO. SHOULD I BRING IT INTO THE SHOP OR IS THIS SOMETHING I COULD DO ON MY OWN. I REALLY HAVE NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE WITH THE MECHANICS OF A CARBURATOR

Mechanically, it's not very difficult but jetting is definately a tricky process involving trial and error. Like Glamis said, try jumping up one (or two ) main jet sizes.

Also, pull out the spark arrestor baffle to increase flow (it should take only a screwdriver but I've had to use a chisel and hammer the screws on a friends bike).
