Whats the big secret here? Why are all of the other Honda quads made with reverse and the 400 isn't?

Some guy told me they dont have it cause when you're racin, you dont wanna have to worry about poppin it into reverse (especially on a 300ex with that reverse lever)

When they 400ex came out i beleive it was made for racing. You dont really need reverse when ur racing. But now that XC and trail riding sport quads is getting bigger, more companies are putting the reverse in.

The motor came out of the XR400 honda dirtbike. Since not many of its competitors at the time had reverse, honda prolly didnt feel the need to waist the money and time to put reverse in. It also saves a bit of wieght, but that doesnt really matter.:D

Yes that is true, but around here we dont race. And its a pain in the ***** pushin 360lbs around ya know?

Does Honda plan on puttin in reverse any time soon?

it is based on the xr400 motor which has no reverse, saves weight, and its not needed;)

everyone is right, but what i heard was that when they were building that bike they had a goal for it to be lighter than 400 pounds so what they did was clue out reverse more for bragging rights on weight, and to add the reverse it would be about 20-25 more pounds weight for the gear and mounting, cuz they would need a new crank and gear case

i don't really see the ponit of reveres i don't really use it on the bayou the only time i use it is when i am trying to get unstuck or backing out of the shop but most of the time i will just push it out of the shop :)

^all are right... There are not plans to put reverse on the 400ex, Honda just wants to clear their 400ex out of stock so they can release thier new quad :D If you are too wussy to move the 400ex around :devil , you shouldnt be riding it. I can move the front end of my MXZ around no problem and it is definately more weight then the 400ex.

Why would you even need reverse on a sport or race quad.

because for those of us who make mistakes like entering a large hill but seeing when at the top its out of your league or when u almost hit a tree, those kind of things just piss u off to lug ur quad around

I am glad i dont have a reverse, it would be jus that much more weight to move around when u get stuck, or to fall on u when u crash...if you want a quad with a reverse, get one that has it, dont complain about somin u cant change.

It would not be that much more weight, Suzuki got reverse on their Z400 and kept the weight under the 400EX. The 400EX was probably never intended to be a race quad since Honda isnt into that apparently. I think it was mostly because the competition (Banshee) didn't have reverse at the time. And I have never heard of the 300EX's lever getting in the way while racing, I have never once hit it or accidently put it in reverse, thats impossible with the set up they have. You would have to "accidently" push the red button, pull in the clutch, then somehow move the lever up, pretty much impossible. Reverse may not be necessary, but it sure can come in handy in the trails whether most of you want to believe it or not.

oh grow a set and get off your 400 and turn it around.............reverse is a sorry excuse for not knowing how to ride!

you don't win by going backwards.Personally I raced a 300ex when that was all we had and I still never used reverse in a race.Be strong :muscle: stop crying you never hear Ballance or Yokely wishing there R had reverse:ermm:

ya the 400ex engine came out of the dirtbike version and there obviously wasnt reverse in it but honda basically left the engine untouched

Ok settle down there....... it was just a curious question on why the 400 dont have reverse, ya didnt have to get your panties in a knot.

And how much weight can another gear put on.

I would like to keep my reverse and also add a 6 and a 7 gear HAHA. Might be able to go a little faster:devil

Reverse would be nice, but I've learned how to plan ahead and find a small hill to drive up, pull the clutch and roll back. Ditto on hill climbs that are over my head. I pull the clutch and modulate speed with front breaks and slightly letting the clutch out. I would take a 6th gear over reverse anyday of the week, I always am looking for it.

would just adding a 6th gear really make it faster? one day they just pop one in and it goes 10 mph faster ( example )

No I dont think so...... It would be like a Warriors gearing (6 speed 4-stroke but only goes 58), except it would be a 6-speed 400ex that still goes 63.

Just my thoughts.

i think honda was thinkin if it dont make it go faster...they dont need it:D :o :p :blah ....and for the ex...they needed all the speed they could get.:blah

ridered you speak the truth on planning ahead,by the time im heading the other direction everyone else is trying to find reverse, and im always trying for sixth.and you other guys wondering if sixth will make you go faster think what would happen if you only had first second and third.

now could you guys imagine a warrior without the 6th gear:eek2:
instaid of going 58, it would go 50 :devil :blah

Actually if the warrior only had 5 gears, they would be more spread out, but probably the same overal final drive ratio. It makes it feel snappier because the gears are closer together, so you can keep it in the meat better. I would say a 6 speed ex wouldnt be much faster overall then a 5. Its pretty rare when you can get a stock ex to even use the gearing it has stock (anyone hit the rev limiter in 5th with the tires on the ground yet?)

Exactly the point that I was trying to get across.

from my understanding the gears would just last longer... less shifting...
