softening stock shocks

i run 400ex a arms shocks...and a countypark shock mount on my 300..and the overall shock action is just way way to stiff for a 150 pound rider...stiffer than a stock 400...the preload is backed all the way off is there anything else you can do..someone else suggested shortening the springs??
