i am having my sidecovers polished at the moment. my question is should i shoot a couple of coats of clear coat on them b4 i put them back on

No! not unless you powdercoat them clear.Ifd you use paint your boots will rub the paint off and it will look like chit.

If you can get them powder coated clear do that. It will probably last longer.
