Does anyone know how to take the chain off? Me and my dad have been trying to find the master link and we can't find it?

Well that would becaust there isnt a master link on the stock chains. i guess you would need a chain breaker to completely remove it from the bike.

or if you have a dremal you can cut or grind with it.

when i had to do it, i took my swingarm off, just so there was no cutting or grinding required

Just like 3punks said, I took my 4" grinder and ground the head off one of the pins and then just tapped the pin through. Chain was apart in less than 10 minutes.

Nausty, you could also adjust your chain as tight as it will go and then do repeated 6' flat-bottoms. It's bound to break then:huh :D

I am still curious as to why you want to remove your chain. if you are installing a new countershaft sprocket, removing the chain is not required.

You only need to remove the chain if it is worn and shot.

You can take off your swingarm (not worth the work)
Or you can just use a hacksaw and cut it off like i did :D

IF YOU NEED TO PULL THE CHAIN THEN THIS WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO PULL THE REAR AXLE AND CARRIER AND GREASE,GREASE, AND GREASE IT SOME MORE.
I PULLED MINE WITH ABOUT 3 MONTHS RIDE TIME AND IT WAS PRACTICALLY DRY AS HAS BEEN THE CASE WITH JUST ABOUT EVERY BEARING I'VE CHECKED. THE FACTORY MUST HAVE BEEN RUNNING LOW ON GREASE THAT DAY!!
RIDE HARD OR NOT AT ALL!!

Mine too. I pulled it all down and just about every thing needed grease.

i cant get my chain back on, the plate for the master link wont slide back into place, i tried plyers, still no luck, any suggestions??

Are you talking about the plate or the clip?? If its the plate, that can be tough sometimes..but should be doable. If its the clip I have fought those before and they can be a real pain in the @$$... I would use vis grips to snap it on..... OR....just take it to a bike shop and have them do it...probably cost you $5 (ontheside) and will save you trouble....sometimes its worth pay someone just to save yourself a headache..
If you don't have a quad shop, try a motocycle shop, bike shop, or even a chain sharpener may have something to do it.. Hope it helps you a little...

What are all the places that should be greased?

Someone needs to do like a drawing to show all the places would should grease over the winter.

thanx man u are prob right, i'll try with vise grips, is that dont work, imma pay a shop 2 do it. another question, i put on a 14t sprocket, do i have 2 tighten the chain??

Yes but not much...if you changed sprockets and you are putting a new chain on that is the same amount of links as your stock one...pull one or two links out..I think you only need to pull one out, and you will have a ton of adjustment for later as it stretches and relaxes a little.

Yeah they will probably only charge you $5-10

the chain is new, its a DID, the bike is a 2001, i bought it used, the previous owner put it on 2 months before i bought it, will i still have 2 take links out??

If you goto a smaller one (14tooth) you dont "have" too...but if you wanna have more adjustment, and not have to pull the adjustement wheel down so far then yes. If you are going to have someone do it anyway for you then "breaking" the chain with a chain breaker and removing one link is about a 1 min job. So to answer you...NO you dont have to..but I would.

When I put my 14 tooth front on I just adjusted the chain. I did not remove any links and had plenty of adjustment left

I can tell you from MY experience that installing a 14T sprocket will not give you enough slack in your chain to remove one link.
You simply lose about 50% of your chain adjustment when its installed.

after it wears some, you might be able to remove a link................but not on a new chain.

I don't know about the 400, but on the 300 the eccentric cam adjuster doesn't give you one full link of adjustment. You could a half-link, but these are hard to find for 520 o-ringers.

Two tools you should not be without if you own a quad:


A chain breaker, and a chain press. Some master links go on no problemo, most go on really tough, especially on a brand new chain. A chain press is cheap, saves tons of time and busted up knuckles, and you'll wonder how you ever got by without one. Both tools are worth their weight in gold.

Rocky Mountain or Dennis Kirk will gladly sell you one. I would call local Motorcycle/quad dealers first. I believe I paid like $7.99 for mine. I've used it a jillion times.

i know this is an old thread and all. But when you use the chain breaker on an aftermarket chain, do you use it on the master link?

You don't need to use a chain breaker if there is a master link. Take the clip off and pop the link out.
