New to ATVing and by the end of the summer I'll probably be heading out into some remote mountain regions for some back country trail riding, and I'm wondering just what kind of stuff/tools etc I should bring along in case of breakdowns/events etc. Short list so far includes a GPS (probably a Garmin Montana 650T), a tire repair kit, and courtesy of my Mom one of those satellite personal locator beacons, probably the ResQLink+ from ACR.

Any other suggestions for stuff that might come in handy?

your off to a good start. depending on what quad you have I would carry a hand full of common wrenches. I ride a Honda so I always carry a pair of vise grips, and 8/10/12/14mm wrenches

Extra gas? A winch, and one of those little fold up shovels might be nice if you think you may find mud with nothing to winch to. You can dig the fourwheeler out, then bury a stump or something as a winch point. A winch and shovel are some of those things that you hope to never need but don't want to leave home without.

Thanks for the replies. I've asked this question in a couple places and so after I compile all the suggestions I'll come back and post the final big list.

OK here's the big list of all the suggestions I've been given, alphabetized to help sort out the duplicates. It's crazy long and of course depending on the type of exploring you’re doing not everything’s entirely necessary. The list covers everything from a light day ride to really back country stuff miles away from anybody. Long list but probably still worth a read through.

Man, that's too much stuff. If you add that much weight, you're going to be breaking stuff that ordinarily wouldn't break. On top of that, it's going to take away from the ride, and cause you grief. If I had known you wanted to take that much stuff, a jeep would have been my recommendation.

Nobody suggested to carry a spare belt for your CVT transmission???? That's definitely in my kit.

Yeah that's def way too much to try to haul in. My pack list will be maybe 1/4 that. This was just the total of what a lot of different people suggested.

Funny yeah had a suggestion to carry tools to change out transmission belt but no suggestion for the belt.

good list of things that could be brought though thats for sure. we often discuss this for sledding in the mountains and what to bring.

fire starter (besides paper, thinking a sealed fire disk or something that will stay dry)

small cook top

pot for cooking

towels to dry off (also to go with the old)

dry food in vac sealed packages (think army rations)

socks (come in handy for changing them if they get wet but can also be used as a wick for fire),

tampons (for fires or cuts)

avalanche probe (we use them in winter for probing but also for making a splint or something) or something solid to support a limb that is broke

just extra things that i can add to the list of things above anyway.

Great list of items!!!!! do you plan to update the list fully again? i would love a copy of it if you end up organizing my items in with any others. PM me or posting it here would be great!
