Got a stock rear shock on a 400ex, how do I turn it? Is there a special tool?

You mean the pre load? I am pretty sure it is just a regular shock adjustment tool :D Looks like a C with little bits of metal stcking out (fits in those little groves :D) with a handle :D Hope that helps.

you need a spanner wrench..or i heard you can use a hammer and a flat head screw driver but neither work to well  //lemme know if you need a pic

i would use a hammer and something flat (a screw driver as long as it isnt a small one that is very pointy) make sure you lift all the sag out of the shock and put something under so it stays out while you are doing this, it will make it so much easier.

Once you raise the quad and loosen the locknut, try spinning the WHOLE SPRING along with the upper adjustment. (not the locknut) This is an altenative to using a screwdriver when you don't have a spanner handy...A little wd40 before getting started also helps...

If the quad is not raised, thereby lessening the preload, forget about it..leveraged by the weight of the quad, the spring is under quite a bit of tension.

i put a jack under where the swingarm attaches and lifted it till the tires were off. then i used a punch to loosen the lock and then the other one. where does everyone have theirs set? how many inches left of thread is there?

Most of all you will need PATIENCE.
