View Full Version : Not your typical exhaust thread

I've been through thread after thread for exhaust on here... And I've yet tind the info I want... This isn't the typical "Will a HMF work" or "does a FMF sound good" nope. So here's what my dillema is.. I'm also subscribed to club700xx (for a friend) and a guy on there (5WOPE) did an exhaust mod to his that I want opinions on. He took a Two Bros shorty from an '07 GSXR 600 and put it on his bike and it looks and sounds amazing. I love the short pipes, they just make so much more sense. I completely understand and respect the SOS and noise factor... That's why I kept it stock when I lived in a subdivision, but now I live out in the sticks where I can ride as loud as I want without pissin anyone off.

Do you guys think it would be crazy to try to do that same pipe on a 400ex. Two Bros 07 GSXR 600 pipe on that motor. I think it would look and sound amazing. I understand I'll have to rejet (that'll be fun). I live at sea level (Delaware) so I plan on starting with a 170 main, 42 Pilot, and 3.5 turns out. Or if I can get a 450r carb for cheap I'll also be doing that. I'm currently running stock pipe/headers with UNI.

I'm really just asking you guys to assure me of my sanity (or lack thereof) because I came, I saw, I heard, and I wanna conquer. Hehehe. When I redid the gaskets on the top end, I ran her open headers and fell in love. Put on the stock pipe and died a little inside. The only pipe I would consider if for some reason this LITERALLY blows up in my face, is a 400ex model Pro circuit T4 or the 2 Bros M7. That's all I'm interested in. I know the sparks has great readings and the HMF is well known.. But I do what I want. ;P I would love to get my hands on a white bros tho... They sound LEGIT.

heres some pics of my bike, I have a white bros R4 full exhaust and I shortened the silencer down. I love this exhaust. I don't have any sound clips, but I might be able to get some later.

as for the street bike exhaust.......if you have the tools and a welder I say go for it.

Hell ya!!! looks good, I used a cut down white bros r4 that was hollowed out on my 440ex drag quad "worked and sounded amazing"

And as long as the gxsr slipon fits the EX header stuff it will work just as good.

Here's my opinion on the subject...

If using the stock header, my experience has been it's a total PITA if the weather changes much in your area.

I say this because I've had this experience with the bigger core slip ons made for the 400EX. We have a 400 kid on our race team and I do the tuning on his bike. It's got an EHS lid, UNI filter, Stage 1 Hot Cam, stock header and bigger core slip on. It's a total PITA to keep in tune. Weather changes, it cuts up and I have to mess with jetting.

This also doesn't generate the kind of power you can get out of a full exhaust, nor the sound quality. Tick more power than stock, lot of noise, trashy sound usually.

I'm glad you commented MtnEX because I'm by the East Coast and the weather here's quite bipolar. You think I should just stick with a full can? I don't mind jetting once... ONCE. But I don't wanna have I rejet 4 times a year. Do you think I would still have to rejet often with a stock cam and aftermarket header? I was thinking power/mega bomb only because those are really the only ones I've heard much about.

Also, personally I like the sound in the video I posted, but that's a 700 EFI engine... Not a carbbed air cooled 400 known for excessive valve tick. Lol

Unless you have the slip on or can get it cheap to free, Stick with a traditional 400ex exhaust and cut it down. That vid only had idle and a blip of sound. Neither got me hot and bothered, If anything the guy wasted time and needs to rev the ******* up so the vid isn't a waste of space and time.

To each their own though. You would be money, time and tune once ahead if you went to the classifieds and bought a used slip on for a 400 and cut it down. 300cc difference, You will not get the same sound. Good luck either way

Thank you guys for your input, I appreciate it. The more I've thought about it, the more I think I'll regret it. I just really like the look of having a shorter larger pipe. Similar to the pipe on the Baja 700xx. But I realize the 300cc difference in design will be massive, however I love the look of it.. Haha. Thank you again so much for all your input!,

I have a question also. I just got a FMF power bomb header and the damn thing is tight against my motor where the bomb part of the header is. Will it hurt anything or should I just send it back?

If it's touching send it back, should be a small tolerance. If not it will vibrate a hole in the header and jug or crack either. It would also cause more motor temp with it tight/touching. IMO I'd send it back.
