01 400ex questions

I just picked up an 01 400ex with a hotcam in it. What oil and filter and how much oil do they take? Any info will be appreciated thanks Dean Jr.

1.95 qts. with filter change. After filling, warm the engine at idle and then shut off, wait a few minutes and check dipstick. Checking when setting cold is not accurate, checking right after shut off is not accurate. 10w 40 Spectra Oil is what I use, I stay away from synthetics on the 400. Some really like the Rotella engine oil also. Check on ebay for a oil filter size and brand, or local dealer.


Also drain oil from under tank, and also drain from drain bolt under shifter.

Cam has nothing to do with the oil. I sometimes drop down to 10W 30 for winter riding, easier starting.

Rotella 15w-40 white bottle. Works super well :)

The rotella t shell 15w-40 diesel motor oil is good to use?

yes. I use it in all 3 of my quads. excellent oil.

Ok thanks for the replies. My local dealer said maxima ATV specific oil 10-40 would be good to run in it also so that's what I'm gonna try an see how it works. Any one ever have problems with this oil? Thanks

Wasting your cash on such oils in a 400ex.

Oh ok! Is it still ok to run that oil in it? If I may ask what is wrong with that oil? Sorry been out of the atv game for awhile

Those super expensive type oils they sell at the dealer arent really worth it. About all they do is cost alot of money. Rotella 15w-40 has been proven by many to be a superior oil and cheap as dirt.

For example: My buddys 450r didnt last any longer than mine did and he used expensive royal purple oil and changed it every ride.

Ok maybe the next oil change or if I don't like this oil I will change it to rotella t 15-40! Will the maxima oil be good in my quad that it won't hurt anything?
