I bought a Primary Drive front sprocket from RMATV and I thought it was the wrong sprocket for a 400EX because it doesn't have any holes for the 2 bolts to hold it on. I then saw a c-clip also in the box but don't know if that works on the EX.

Has anyone used a c-clip to hold the front sprocket on a 400EX? Do all Primary Drive front sprockets come like that?

what size sprocket is it? I ordered a 13t and it came with a c-clip. it worked fine and I never had any problems with it. I think its for if the sprocket is too small to use the standard clip and two bolts

You have to use the clip with the 13 tooth sprocket if you use bolts they will actually hit the chain as it goes around the sprocket. I was scared of the clip at first too, it hasn't failed yet after 5 races on it and a few practices

I always wondered how they attached it when the sprocket got any smaller than a 14. I remember looking at my 14 when I was putting it on and saying "Damn, these bolts almost hit the chain on here. Wouldn't they hit if it was a 13? Oh well..."

Try a 12t front. Never did, but dang! ;)

A lot of dirt bikes use just a snap ring from the factory. As long as it's snug in the groove you'll never have to worry about it. There is no strain on the clip, all the strain is on the shaft

Thanks for the info guys. Actually I ordered a 13 tooth early this spring and it came with no holes and RMATV didn't include the clip so I thought they sent the wrong sprocket. I called them and they sent a Renthal 13 tooth at no additional cost and that one does use the bolts.

This summer I bought some 22" rears to use for hill climbing where it is rocky and rutted because my swingarm was dragging in spots. I rode twice with the 22's and the 13-38 gearing is way too high for these insanely big hills with no run. Myself and all the 400 guys on Z's or EX's use 2nd gear but I had to use 1st which does not provide enough speed and/or wheel spin. So anyways I ordered a 12 tooth front only to use when hill climbing with 22" tires and it came with the clip.

I have not tried putting it on yet because I still run 20's every place I ride except for one that is rutted and rocky. RMATV didn't want the 13T sent back this spring and since I thought it was for another quad I threw it away. Now I wish I would have kept it.

I had a 12 tooth on the front of my 450 when I bought it (can't remember the rear), the PO also had 18s on with it. Good lord talk about low geared. He raced motocross but it wasn't really motocross, more outdoor national on a slightly smaller scale (Hawkeye Downs, FV Moto X in Montezuma, and a couple others) and I don't see how it was fun at all. He must have been shifting so often his foot hurt. It got up to 65 pretty fast, but then you were bouncing off the rev limiter in 5th gear in 5 seconds.

Wow Stickman, a 12T front with 18's on a 450 is crazy! The 450 climbers I ride with all use 13T fronts with 20" tires and 12T with 22's and they climb most hills in 1st where I mostly use 2nd. But my top speed in 2nd on my 416EX is almost the exact same as the top speed of a 450 in 1st with our gearing. I can't imagine a 12T with 18's, very strange.

Yea, the PO of my quad, before my buddy that I bought it from, knew how to spend money and that was about it. He wasn't very mechanically inclined, I could tell just from all the stupid small **** that was wrong with it when I bought it from my buddy.
