Yesterday I bent the stem and it's not bad it's barely bent I continued to ride the rest of the day but I was just wondering how you guys would recommend bending it back I know it will be weaker but I'm going to weld a solid steel rod inside of it

i would use a hydraulic press. on something like that you won't get any more strength from putting a solid piece of steel in it, i would use a piece of tubing with an OD that's the same as it stem's ID.. i would use a piece of 1/8" wall tubing.

Depends on how it was bent. The stem itself is not all to easy to bend, the handlebar mount is much easier. I flipped down a coal hill on my 400ex 3 years ago and bent the handlebar mount on the stem. We took a ratchet strap and a hooked it to the bent end of the bars, then the other end to a tree and lifted it off the ground. Then 2 of us used our weight and jumped up and down on the nerfs yanking the mount back in place.

If you bent the tube, a press is what you need. They are like 50 bucks on ebay, so if its bent really bad just buy a new one.

It's the tube part of the stem an I would say that it's bent probably 1/4in-1/2in it's really not that bad

yeah that will work. these stock stems bend like butter they are extremely easy to bend. I've rolled my 400's pretty lightly and it was enough to bend my stem, if you have aftermarket bars it;'ll bend it easier too. the stock bars are so soft that they will often bend before the stem has a chance too, but not many guys run stock bars.

also if it's just slightly bend you can literally just stand on the footpeg and bend it back but it will just be that much weaker.

So you're saying that the 400ex stem will work? Sorry I was a little confused in what you're saying

Usually that guy doesnt know what hes talking about, not that i know the answer myself, but id do some research before you buy a 400ex stem for your 450..

Easy with the cheap shots hondaracing83. Did you have anything to offer to the thread or just throwing out shots because you're behind a keyboard?

OP -- I read wrong I thought u said it was for an 05 then I looked at the bike in your SIG and assumed 400ex. A 400ex stem is skinnier so it will only work if u use 400ex clamps too. I would just get a 450 replacement stem.

I picked up a few for around $50 shipped for a stocker which I thought was cheap

For the 400ex stem, measure and see the diameter. Stock 400 stems were a smaller diameter but some aftermarket stems used a larger diameter stem and custom clamps. measure it against your bent stem to find out

just keep in mind the 400ex stems has a skinnier diameter than the 450 stem, so you will more than likely have play up where the clamp and bushing mount is.

Question is: Do you need a stem for your the quad in your signature OR on for a 450r? Confused.
Also, I don't think its a good idea to "reinforce" the stem with a pipe. Because, IF and WHEN it happens again, Metal will bend at the weakest point...So, if the stem is solid you'll more than likely bend part or the frame...I'd rather replace a stem 10 times than a frame once.... Just my 2cents..

I wouldnt reinforce the stem either.. When you wreck somethings gonna give and break you just gotta pick your weakest point.

Well I traded all my old 400ex parts motor for a houser stem the oly thing I'm wondering is wether its a +1 or +2 because he knew it was longer than stock he just didn't know how much longer
