View Full Version : Thankful for these forums and rebuild question

Yeah these forums aren't as active as they were back when I joined 4 + years ago (nor am I) but I am thankful for the many tips I received here on purchases and places to ride. Mostly I am thankful for the handful of riding buddies I picked up. Which leads me to my post and both points.

Lonnie hit me up today inquiring about doing some Sunday single day rides in the near future and I told him about my bottom end having to be rebuilt. He offered to help me out and let me know what my options were once he took it apart. Very cool him since I can't turn wrenches so it will defiantly save me some cash.

So the question is do I go with a stock rebuild or since I have it apart get a stroker 460? I don't race but I do like the notion of having the extra power for hole shots and when we hit the flats and I'm in 5th gear. Stock will run my roughly $500 and the stroker around $1100. My biggest concern is longevity. Will the stock give me twice the life time for 1/2 the money? Will I have to keep my r's up on the tighter winding trails with the big bore? Do you really blow out more head gaskets with the big bore or is that just a myth? Any feed back is appreciated and Lonnie rocks!!

Personally Id leave it stock for reliability.

I found the best overall motor I ever did for the 400 was 416 11:1 and the 450r carb :)

I cant believe your bottom end went, you been riding alot lol? I hardly got out this summer really, sooo busy with other stuff right now :(

chain was loose and kept coming off finally went through the case. I had purchased a chain guard but it didn't fit :(

Aw that stinks :( Find yourself a plastic/poly chain guard. That way it will wear into that should it happen again.

lesson learned i hope. I see this happen all too often, many times it's pure accident but if you're running a loose chain you're flirting with disaster, the fact that it came off before it did the damage is enough to make me stop right there until things are fixed.

I was stuck in the woods 4 miles from the trail head, my buddy was on a dirt bike so he couldn't tow me and not one of the douche bags riding their side by's would tow me, I had to leave it there in the woods over night & do the 7 hour round trip from VA to NJ again the next morning. So much for southern hospitality.

I blew a couple head gaskets on my 426 before I found out that you had to torque the head down tighter with higher compression. I torqued both the cylinder and head to 40 ft lbs instead of the stock 30 and no more problems.

thanks for the heads up mikey! But I think CJM confirmed what I needed to hear. For a rider like me stock is the way to go.

I can't wait, I ordered them both. Hopefully in three weeks weather permitting we can set up a ride. Again very thankful for these forums. picked up some good tips, places to ride and very cool riders to hang with & get help from.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/190518644764?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

some of them reference the bore size. Did I need to get one for 86mm? Or is this one ok?

Doesnt matter bore size unless you have a 440. Piston doesnt come up high enough.

Looks like the right gasket, if it doesnt look all rubberized metal when you get it DO NOT use it. Like I said over the phone, some show the one pic and send the junk fiber gaskets.

Be very careful when torqueing down the head. Go in steps and be warned that the 400s are very bad about pulling the head studs during the torqueing procedure.

Thanks for the heads up Fast I will pass that on to Lonnie who is doing the rebuild for me.

Marc,
Should I put a bid in on one of these since I'm going to spend $25-$30 on a rebuild kit anyway? What year did you say to get? ES or R matter?

Thats why I was talking about going to the heavy duty studs as well. Its a rarity but does happen.

The carb needs to be off an 04-05 TRX450R, anything after that is an FCR carb and while it will work-it takes alot of work to do. In order to put the R carb on isnt all that hard but does require some work and you lose the choke b/c it binds with the fuel line. So ya gotta pump it 3-5 times to prime it before it starts. First two you linked will work. Join trx 450r . org, people sell those carbs all the time CHEAP.

OldGuyonaQuad
04-02-2014, 07:08 PM
thanks Marc, choke is no biggie I bought it without one as is so it wouldn't be missed. I will feel Lonnie out on the conversion to see if he is comfortable, what all do you have to do to convert it? bigger carb = more gas + more air intake =more hp?

CJM
04-02-2014, 09:19 PM
Yea it drinks a little more gas and makes a bit more power :)

to convert one isnt all that hard. Plug the hotstart, change where one of the vac lines goes, need to run an adapter or buy an pvc fitting from home cheapo. If wayne can machine things you might want him to make the adapter out of aluminum. Not hard to do in the end really just takes some time. Real shame you didnt do this earlier, had one already to go I sold.

thanks Marc, yea figures I'm usually a day late and a dollar short. I registered to that site and checked the for sale forums (hhm I didn't even check here yet) found one that he wanted $200 and everyone told him it was a $60 carb.

At most Id pay 125 for a SUPER clean one or if it was in good shape just to have it asap. It can always be added later anyways no rush now.

I sent you a pm there.

Throttle cable off the 400 can be used, hotstart cable not needed. Your actually going to plug the hotstart off with RTV. What you do need is the hotstart plunger/cap that goes into the carb. Well you dont actually need them, but it seals better imho. Cause you could just fill the port with rtv totally minus parts.

this is what you said I would need to fabricate or purchase and rig from HD? sorry for the stupid questions.

The adapter Baily is talking about is a machined piece of aluminum, it fits over the air intake side of the carb. The stuff from home depot is just some plumbing fittings and pvc maybe to make it a bit more rigid. The 3 I set up all used the adapter, not sure if the guy does it anymore but a guy in the 400ex section makes them. If Wayne can machine stuff its not to hard really, once you see the carb you will understand why. The 450r intake boot is slightly longer and the R carb wont fit on the 400 intake boot as its a bit short. The carb itself is also slightly larger than the stock carb. The adapter fixes these two issues, what you have to do to install one is basically sand off (I used a dremel) a small ridge on the carb intake and then use something like jb weld or (my preferred choice) gray rtv.
