Has anybody ever done this on a 400EX? I have 22"s and using the handy dandy gear calculator it looks like I could just drop the front to a 13 and it would put me just under stock w/20"s:

its possible....you wondering if people have done it and liked it?
or you can do 14/39 and go back to stock

It is a very sharp bend on the chain I'd just do the rear sprocket

Don't 300's run a 13 tooth with the same size chain?

This does work out pretty well. I switch my girlfriends quad between 20" and 22" tires all the time (she has a spare set of rims and tires). You loose a little power from the added weight of the tires but otherwise, it runs the same (meaning if you usually do a hill in 2nd then it will stay the same).

Raptors go as low as 12 tooth on the front. A smaller front will rob a little more power due to the tighter bend and cause the chain to wear a bit more since is it bending further each turn. Many quads come stock with a 13 tooth and use the exact same chain.

You can pick up a 13 tooth from www.sidewinder.com. You can get the Ti one if you don't ever want to buy another front again or opt for one of the others.
