I hate typing on my phone so until I get to a computer, I'll make this short. I'm in the process of a teardown/build/powdercoating since it's winter and drag season don't start till the end of April.

Me engine is already to the builder. It's getting bored to a 426, 11:1 piston, Webb cam, hardened rockers, and a drag port/polish. Maybe he'll do some other little things to help out. I would run higher compression but I ride fields and this is my sleeper quad. ;)

I was running 450s easily last year. I know some of you will knock me down but I was. I ran 4.9 at the 250. I'll be racing more actual 300ft this year and even in sand which is new to me.

As for powdercoating, yellow and black.

The swingarm bolt was the biggest problem. Not even going to explain what me and my buddy had to do to get that out...

How it sat before teardown:

Workin on the other part of the bolt to break the swingarm free.

Yeah tinypic always rotates them for some reason and photobucket never resizes them. But here's a picture of the frame ready for powdercoating when the engine gets back. Do I have to take the steering stem bushing out or just let it in there?

Picture of how my bottom end got to the guy. There was minor damage but he said he could fix it. I wrote fragile on 4 sides and the top and arrows on all 4 sides:

He got my gasket kit. Piston should be coming Monday, cylinder should be done wednesday. Then the following week, the hardened rockers and webb cam should be in.

Looks like great progress. You should take the steering stem bearing out before powder coating. It is actually a bearing not a bushing.

Just curious what are they doing to the bottom end? When I have sent or bought entire motors or bottom ends we have always used a home made wooden crate or a plastic bin with foam and cardboard dunnage to protect the motor during shipping.

Also I am curious how the web cam compares to the stage 2 hotcam but I guess you won't know with going to a 426 and porting at the same time. Let us know this spring how your times compare from before and after the build.

I'm just getting him to look at it. Last summer during a few races, I went from 2nd to 3rd and it wouldn't shift to 3rd, so not sure what caused that. Everything looks fine from what I could tell but he would be able to tell better.

Yeah I won't know because I'm going to the bigger bore. I've been told all good about them. I guess they're a more aggressive cam.

The guy that's helping me with this made my FMF T4 pipe into a shorty. It looks pretty awesome. It had big gashes at the clamp to the subframe but he cut all that out. We kept the packing and all in, just made it a lot shorter.

Just got another slip on in the mail. It's an HMF and I got it for 75 shipped. It was so muddy I couldn't even see the color lol. But it's all clean now.

Guy got my cylinder done and the piston. I'll post pictures here sometime.

He's doing the port job this weekend too. Hopefully next week the webb cam and rockers come in too then it'll be pretty much ready to come back to me.

Yeah they are pretty tall. And I asked why the hmf was so muddy and he said his water lines were frozen so I just cleaned it in a bucket of warm water, lol.

Wander if I take everything out of this hmf, and compare it to my fmf shorty, how it would sound/perform..

*UPDATE*
Head is done. The pictures on the left are how it was before and on the right is how they are now. The builder before my current builder ported it wrong. It normally takes my current builder 2.5hrs, and it took him around 5.5 hours to do it this time. He bumped my jet from a 210 to a 220 main too. Just waiting on Web Cams to send the cam/rockers back. Hoping they will be back to him this week. Got everything ready to powdercoat too. We're cutting the stock arms' balljoints off and replacing them with gtthunder ball joints so I can get the stock arms powdered.

Here's the heart back. Taking all of big covers off and taking them with me Saturday to powdering. Main color is gold since the frame is black and he's doing all the plugs/little covers black. Also doin my hmf in black with a gold end cap.

Also, might clean up the rest of the motor and use high temp black paint. We might do something different with the cylinder part though and the fins.

Well just saw that the bottom drain plug was snapped off in shipping. F***!

This will put me behind some. There's a UPS inspector supposed to call me today and schedule an appointment someday this week to see if it's worthy to get my $1,500 back in insurance. UPS really pisses me off. It was damaged going there and now coming back. There's a fourwheeler shop near me I just found out about so I messaged him and he said he should be able to weld it.. Hopefully.

The only good thing I got done over the weekend is take some of the main/bigger parts to powdercoating.

Another local shop said he can fix it so when I get the cash back, it's going there and being welded. It's not delaying me a whole lot but pisses ya off when you spent around $1,200 on a motor and it comes back broke.

How was it packed? I learned a long time ago anything thats fragile should be overpacked as much as you possibly can.
Yeah two boxes and a lot of packing. I shipped it down there in pieces. The bottom end in one box and packed the living hell out of it and the cylinder-up in another box. When you shook them they didn't budge. My bottom end arrived out of the box and other box was fine.

Yeah I sent it in one but in two separate pieces so it didn't weigh a lot. Then he sent it complete back in two boxes and all that packing. I just think UPS don't give two shi*ts about anything. Same goes with FedEx. Even wrote Fragile on 5 sides of the box and arrows.

damn that sucks..

I shipped a KFX450 engine to FL once and I made a cradle out of 3/4" plywood cut a piece of styrofoam with a wire cutter to form tightly to the engine so it couldn't move..

I sent pictures of it with the shipping info for the seller and he sent me a picture when it arrived and the box was BEAT it looked like they threw it of a few overpasses. My buddy bought a Yoshi 450 for his Z400 and it came in a legit ice chest, that is the BEST way to ship an engine.. It was mint inside still.

best way to ship a motor is to go ahead and splurge the $30 at walmart for one of these coolers. get the motor in there and pack the heck out of it with carboard and whatever you got laying around. in the end you have an undamaged motor and a nice cooler :)

Sure is! 1 of 3 Direct Drive made especially for sleeper 400exs. Nobody believes me, but I was giving them a run last year even though my motor wasn't in the best shape it could be in. Stock bore too. I'll be in the beginner and stock classes at the fair races so yeah, they do enter in there even though they're not stock either. In the points races this year, I'm not sure but i'll probably run with some of them. There's a 400 class too so I hope to do killer in that class.

Wish I could change my name from cheater to ChillyPhil atleast.... lol. I created the cheater name forever ago when I played ps3. :p

400ex is a beast when its jetted right, people dont believe how much it actually wakes up and deff gives 450s a run for their money! You just have to own a 400ex and build it and tune it right to find out. People just dont realize that motorcycles and atvs arent jetted at all from factory, they come with a carb that has its own stock size jetts in it and is basically designed to start and run normally not in any performance way at all. I just jetted my honda shadow with a 1/16 drill bit for the main jet and a 60lb wire fishing leader for the pilot. Both were MUCH LARGER then the standard 115 main and 40pilots. That simple mod added more rpm and more rpm power throughout the whole bike, it revs much faster and actually feels like it added about 5hp.

Man your really looking to stick it to those 450s arent ya, got the lock up and everything. You might even be close to my hybrid times with all your new mods, i would try to drop the weight down a bit to, get some drag struts remove all the unessescary stuff like air scoops and front brakes, you can drop like 45lbs just unbolting some stuff and drag strutting it. My best dirt drag time so far was 3.65 with 4snows, they had a 1200hp 4 wheel drive nitro truck on alky with paddle tires run 3.18 at the same track on the same day. My friend on his high mod yfz450 with 10 paddle haulers ran a 3.85 just to give you a idea of your competition down here in Florida ;)

Good luck!

My hybrids for sale by the way.....

02-17-2014, 01:47 PM
It sure is man! I agree 100% with everything you said. And I hope to be around your times, maybe a hair behind though. ;) I hope you're building something else then man! Don't wanna see you leave the sport.

*UPDATE*

UPS is bull****ting me around again. I called the company down where they told me to since they were done inspecting it. Long story short, I called today and they have no record of them calling. They said that's wrong on their end to tell me false info. So they pretty much lied to me. This pisses me off. They're just messing me around is how I interpret it.

Anyways... Right now my engine is getting fixed up again at another shop. Still waiting on powdercoating, but it will be picked up this weekend. I'll be dropping more stuff off too.

Not sure if I want to powder my HMF gold with black endcap or reversed. I'm taking the packing out and cutting the spark arrester, but leaving around 1-2" for alittle backpressure. Might decide to cut it all off down the road since it'll be a strict drag pipe.

cheater13

Have to order a xr400 case for this lockup to fit. Hopefully my oil cover for my 400ex clutch case works for it.

cheater13
02-20-2014, 06:27 AM
Have to get the xr case custom machined to fit my reverse shaft through now because I really don't want to take it out to put my lockout in.

This beast should be half put together Saturday since I get a lot of my parts back from powdering back. So I'll have some pictures later that day. :)

BUT I'm not the happiest on my motor work that was don't cause I knew I would want bigger, lol. So I'm getting it overhauled. I'm taking this awesome builder I found another head and getting a +1 valve setup before season starts. Then later in season I'm getting the biggest Web cam I can get and he's going to look over the bottom end and make sure everything is perfect in there.

Then I'm getting it test and tuned on the dyno. Nothing like throwing another grand on this dang thing especially since I just had it done. :p

Since i own a pretty well build 426 i'll say jetting won't make it give my 450 a run for it's money, lol. It'll take a boatload to get the old 426 to run even with my 450. Motorcycles and atv's are jetted from the factory, there's realy no such thing as a stock jet, there's such thing a stock size jet sure. Most atv's are pretty well locked down and closed up because they have to pass emissions laws. they are designed to run most efficiently while poluting the least. As far as drilling out your jets and running fishing wire for the pilot i would not recommend that to anybody. jets are like 3 dollars you can get them almost any powersports shop, why not use the jets?

cheater are you planning to just leave the packing out all together on the pipe? have you considered a shorty style with packing?

cheater13

I'm getting it jetted to perfection to where it makes the most hp and runs right from the dyno he has. And dang, well my stock bore 400 was giving them a run on the drag strip, lol.

And I did make a shorty but when you make them a shorty, they get ruined according to the dyno. They lose power for some reason. I have a FMF T4 shorty with packing and now I'll have my HMF for drag racing. I'm decided to not cut the arrester off of the HMF. I'm putting fresh packing in also.

The guy I had my motor drain plug fixed tried to educate me for a few hours on everything so I tried to take in as much as I could. He also said about gearing and said to get the biggest front you can and then just change the rear according to the strip. He was a big racer since he was 19 and said he was in the same boat as me with all this stuff.

Well, guess I have to take reverse out of my engine to get this XR400 case on there to use my lockout. That sucks cause I just bought a brand new reverse cable.

Direct Drive can't fabricate the hole for the reverse shaft to fit though. If anyone knows of anyone that could fabricate that hole and seal for the reverse shaft to go though the xr400 case like my 05 400ex case, please let me know.

Powdercoater coated it the wrong color. Did it all yellow. Guess pictures will be up next Saturday now.

Bring it to a machine shop! If it cant be done they will tell you why, if it can they will tell you how much it will cost...lol.

I think direct drive just doesnt have the ability to throw it on a bench and recreate a program to drill it out for a few customers when most people wouldnt even do it to a 400ex in the first place. Just my thought on it.

I'm actually shipping it to a machine shop in Virginia I found. It'll be expensive but I rather keep my reverse.

Got some parts back from powdering too. :)

Here's a few pictures of what I got back Saturday. Powdered "Electric Yellow" and "Textured Black." There's a few cracks in the silver pieces that the swingarm bolt goes through so hopefully that doesn't effect anything.

He did my frame yellow instead of black so it's getting redone this week. It would look killer if I had all black plastics.

I'm also getting this xr400 clutch case shipped out to me for $60 today. Then March 10-11th, I'm sending it away with my stock 05 400ex case to get a reverse shaft hole put in it so I can keep my reverse. When it gets back, it'll be powdercoated gold with black covers and the spacer will be black.

Got a lot of random pictures. Only have $375 more parts to order plus the cost of machining my xr400 cover and getting the head redone again. I ordered a lot of parts yesterday so I'm getting there. :)

I ordered my tusk axle, xr clutch side gasket, 400ex stator side gasket, chain roller with bearings and covers on, muffler packing, Galfer Stainless Steel front/rear brake lines, alba brake line holders, tusk throttle cable, motion pro clutch cable, new swingarm bolt/bearing/seal kit, Honda reverse cable, steering stem bearings, and Burgard anti fade locknut so far.

Still have to order my Rockstar handlebar pad, yellow/black grips, HMF Vector endcap, Stainless Steel engine bolt kit, IMS shifting lever, my saw blade rear brake rotor, TM Designworks chain slider, black ASV levers, EVS neck brace, black 10mm lug nuts, different graphics, and a few other small pieces.

I might go with the last design I posted just because the yellow in the others wouldn't match my plastic's yellow.

Get whatever ones you like and go with them! I used Spastic but you could check out Dirt Fiend, Spider graphix, G4 graphics ect if you're looking to get customized ones..

Cheater, that thing is going to look and run amazing when you are done. I am always intrigued by people who have the patience, time, and money to make their quads look so nice. I sure don't because I know it is going to get ridden in the dirt and mud. Last year on a couple trips I cleaned the crap out of my quad and waxed the fenders and then 5 minutes into the ride it was dirty and you couldn't really see it very well anyways so I wondered why I bothered LOL. And this is hill climbing and blitzing trails, I don't do mud!

But I also realize yours is mostly a drag quad and that and dune quads I can see worrying about the looks. I wouldn't do it to my own but I sure drool over others who do. Chronic's quad was a thing of beauty.

Thanks man, really appreciate it. I'm getting riding withdrawals since I haven't rode it since last October, haha. But mine's actually going to be an all around quad. I might do some motocross riding when I get my 450r shocks redone. I'm going to buy full skids to run when I trail and field ride it, and then there's drag mode. ;)

But yeah, I'm glad chronic posted his when I was deciding on my colors. They might look similar but a few things are different. And I like your huge, muddy picture chronic. :D Hopefully mine don't look like that ever.

Some updated pictures (crappy iPhone quality) Hopefully getting the actual head/cylinder powdercoated next winter. Maybe even my bottom end. I think I might go with them last graphics I posted of the Reaper just because the ones with yellow in don't match the yellow of my plastics.

Here's some pictures of the backup head I got, right before I took it to the builder yesterday. Once it gets done, I'll try and get pictures of it again. I'm doing a +1 valve setup and going ahead and getting it setup to run the biggest Web Cam I can buy.

I'm just gunna run the smaller Web Cam I have in it right now though until I get some money built up to redo my bottom end. I'm getting something done to the tranny gears so they pretty much last forever. It's a 2 week process and around $275. Makes shifting a lot smoother too.

The head isn't in the best of shape but my builder said he'll make it look like new once he's done.

Just ordered a stainless steel engine bolt kit, Rockstar handlebar pad, yellow/black grips, IMS shift lever, 2 Tusk white headlight bulbs, 15 front sprocket, 36 rear sprocket, yellow/black monster shock covers, and an HMF Vector endcap.

I wanna order one of those saw blade brake rotors and yellow 450r carb breather hoses. Gotta get my neck brace and black lug nuts too. I ordered the wrong throttle cable though. Ordered one for a 400ex and needed one for a 450r carb. So I'm just using the stock one since it's still good.

Then off to the engine builder to get the new head put on and test and tuned on the dyno! That'll still be a few weeks once I get the cases back.

Yeah it definitely is. Got referred to this guy from a local drag team. He said he did bada** work and was in Virginia. He has his own machine shop and mainly does fabrication to drag cars. He works with stuff for race quads too.

Can't wait to see how it fits up. Haven't seen this done before so it'll be a first.

oh you're funny mark. nice cheap shot ya little 2 year old. you want me to post the swingarm after a full season of hard TT racing just so you can diss on the tig weld some more? chuckie creech racing did the welding and that crew is a professional tt race crew with more experience in the sport than many. you sorry cheater, but if ya follow me you can see in my build thread where mark was crying about some welding and this is his attempt at bashing my budget build swingarm. mark i dare you to get on facebook and try your trolling. can't hide behind the 10k posts of your little monitor bud, keep it up while you have rep here, but let's face it.....in the community you're nothing, just you and little moderator friends from the org who run around like cronies on the forums. you are what we call a poser. you have more keyboard atv time than you have actual ride time. you talk more than you act. let's hit the track mark otherwise don't challenge some of the guys who keep the sport alive!

It just gets old man you push buttons then go running. I actually very rarely see broken swingarms. Maybe never. Seem stems, frames, a arms, axles, body parts but not many swingarms.

The reverse mod this way is definitely a first that I've seen. I miss the reverse on my old 07

I think its very cool :)

Honestly never had anything besides a junky suzuki 230 sport with reverse so I cant say Id even want or miss reverse lol.
Haha yeah, I just really wanted to keep my reverse and run a lockout too. It comes in handy in the woods where I ride. :)

Yeah, it's a first since everything was designed for the 04 and under 400s. So I had to get some fab work done. I love reverse.

Thanks man, and yeah it's their colors. I don't watch a whole lot of football besides the SuperBowl though. :p

Good ole stock a arms because I didn't wanna go extended with me doing drag racing. GTThunder cut them and put removable balljoints on. And thanks man! It took a lot of work and money to get it to this point.

*UPDATE* (This is not in full drag mode)

Got a lot together last week and weekend. Pretty much just need rear brake lines installed and bled, new graphics ordered, and that's close to it. The XR400 case fits right up so that was awesome. I didn't take a lot of detailed pictures but it's lookin good. The guy that's doing a lot of the "putting back together" is really making it clean-looking. Especially all of the wiring under the hood since I run a fan kit and an LED kit.

Before rear lowering strut was put on. Have to run 300ex shocks now since I can't run my front lowering kit with the ball joints I had put on. Sits even lower than last year though!

With rear lowering strut put in. By the way, I'm not running this shorty for dragging. I got a HMF that color matches the motor. It still needs put together though:

Don't know why the plastics always look crooked from the rear:

Sits way lower in the front compared to having my lowering kit on that I ran last year:

Them stainless steel bolts really look nice:

Lockout Installed. I assume this is how it goes. Not sure how it works though since I'm new to it:

Took my clutch cover and a few other pieces over to the powdercoater yesterday. Should be done tomorrow and all together by Saturday.

Taking it to the shop to swap heads and put it on the dyno then the same day. Gunna start it up Saturday before I take it to the shop though because I'm curious of what this FMF T4 shorty will sound like before I put my color matching HMF on.

If I have time today at work, I'll post some random pictures of stuff.

Gunna put the clutch side on this evening after work and it'll be done. We're gunna start it up and make sure it idles/sounds good and don't leak oil out of anywhere so everyone cross their fingers. Here's some more pictures.

Clutch Case. XR400r case with custom spacer for the lockout. Also got the kicker plug custom made:
http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/pp47/cheater13_photos/Mobile%20Uploads/image-101.jpg (http://s396.photobucket.com/user/cheater13_photos/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image-101.jpg.html)

Got this custom made since it's a hornet and it kind of goes with my fourwheeler now since it's yellow and black. It's sharpied:

Then we decided to polish it and we will paint it again later:

I figured I'd post a million pictures for everyone. I'll only have a few left to post when it gets back from the shop and put into drag mode.

Had to make custom brackets. Got Galfer brake lines too:
http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/pp47/cheater13_photos/Mobile%20Uploads/image-102.jpg (http://s396.photobucket.com/user/cheater13_photos/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image-102.jpg.html)

Had to make our own bolts to fit this since they were a lot longer due to the spacer:
http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/pp47/cheater13_photos/Mobile%20Uploads/image-104.jpg (http://s396.photobucket.com/user/cheater13_photos/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image-104.jpg.html)

Oil can got bent on this side but we bent it out enough to line up with the bolts:
http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/pp47/cheater13_photos/Mobile%20Uploads/image-106.jpg (http://s396.photobucket.com/user/cheater13_photos/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image-106.jpg.html)

This is low because the 300ex shocks I put on for drag racing:

Custom made throttle cover. Going to get a brake cover made next (Looks like this because it still had some black sharpie in it and it was drizzling.

Looks and feels real nice. Barely has any play in at all compared to my stock levers. They're pretty similar to my buddy's ASV levers.

Cool. Been thinking about going with a set for awhile now.

I say go for it. I originally ordered the ASV levers but the day after the company contacted me and said they were on backorder. They said they would send the Reflex levers at no extra charge. Of coarse I took it. They're around $180 levers I believe.

Goin to pick er up from the shop today after work! He did all the work in 1 day which was awesome.

The only thing he said is that it's running a hair richer than he likes. He said he couldn't get it 100% perfect on the dyno because of the 450r carb. He said it has a lot more in it and to go with a FCR down the road and it'll fix all of my problems. Guess I have to look for one of those now. ;)

Here's some final pictures of it. Thanks to everyone that helped me get this thing where it's at today. It took forever, but was definitely worth it. It sits super low so I'm going to take 3 different sets of tires including the scooters that are on it just in case there are huge ruts in the track.

Dyno sheet that was requested. The dip is from the trx450 carb. After I get a FCR carb, that'll go away. And the dip at the top is the cam. It's only a mild Web cam so when I get the one I want, that'll go away too. Feels awesome though!

Thanks man! I knew you been spying on this ole thread.

But I guarantee it! The two best ones on there are around 60-70hp. But you're comparing a 2 to a 4 so that isn't fair to start with. :D

Buddy and I just picked up an ole 88-89 ATC 250r liquid cooled 2 stroke trike last night. It'll be a project for this year.

Also, if anyone knows where I can get a 06+ 450r/CRF250r FCR carb for cheap, let me know.
