i have a 92 250x and i am starting to do some stuff to the bike but how sturdy are the frames and do i have to worry about making it stronger

If your going to race it, you should have it gusseted. My friend jesse's old 250x lasted a year with no probs and hes a heavy guy.

I would beef it up a little. I have never had a problem with X EX frames, but my freinds front end on his 87 broke completly threw in six spots. never seen anything like it in my life. the only think holding the front end on was the tie rods. It caused the lower shock mounts to break on both sides also.

it should be alright unless you are a serious racer and race alot.

They take a lot of abuse. Really depends on how much your gonna race her. If you know a guy that can do it cheap I'd go for the gusseting.
