Im planning out my motor build, will i need gt thunder hd headstuds for a 11:1 407 or 416 wiseco with hotcam? Id like to avoid it if possible.

NO....I did several builds with 11:1, web cam with the stockers. It wasn't until after it was a 416, then 426 that I went with a 440 12.5:1 piston that they started to give out and blow gaskets.

Sweet. Im probably gonna do a 416. I wasnt sure. What do you think about cams? Everybody knows hotcams but id be interested in trying out webcams. Something similar to a stage 2 hotcam. I do alot of hillclimbimg and fast trail riding and occasional road riding to gravel pits and such

yea, wish I would have done this. I went from stock straight to a JE 416, my buddy talked me into it, back when I didn't know better. I wasted a bore :o

I went with the 407 and I'm happy I did, got 2 more bores before I have to decide to get a new cylinder or go big, and that's atleast another 10 years based on how long it took my stocker to need a rebuild. And I bought HD studs for mine when I did the rebuild but didn't fell like sending my cylinder off and waiting so I skipped them and I haven't had an issue yet.

When mine gets tore down around the end of December, I'm going 426 with a 12.5:1 piston and a webb cam for it. Also some major head work. Doing most of this for drag racing though.

Gotta keep it field ride-able too! :D

How is it wasting a bore? these cylinders are cheap as they get. you can go to a 416, then to a 426. Unless you let all kinds of crud into your cylinders you should be able to run a bore for a good amount of time. Not sure why it is considered wasting a bore. I went straight to 426, got hundreds of hours and 2 years on the thing and it's not smoking yet.

The 416 won't put out much more power than the 407, so it's not really a big deal. How many people can actually say they bored to 407, then took the same cylinder and bored it to a 416, then took the same cylinder and bored it to a 426? Cylinders are a dime a dozen especially stock ones, if you're worried about wasting a bore, it's as easy as spending $75 on a stock cylinder and bore it to whatever you want. This seems like a 2 stroke mentality, but with the 400's there's no wasting bore, you can get hundreds of hours on a bore, so sure maybe if you're looking to plan for the next 10 years on the same cylinder, it might be a good idea. Far as building a good quad, build it the way you want, cylinders are nothing.

Web cam was all they had back in my day, they are a good cam but you will have to spend more money on hardened rockers, Web cams wear off the chrome plating on the stockers too fast, so Web strips the chrome off and puts a weld, grind and polish on them, you will have to exchange your stockers for them. You don't have to do that with the Hotcams. Web does offer a few different types of cams, some for drag, I think mine is close to the hot cam 2, if you go bigger with a Web you have also put in shortend valve guides.....I would go with Hotcam 2 if I was you.

As far as bore size i run a 407, or 406 which ever you prefer....back in my time it was 40.00 a bore size...so a 416 would coast 80.00....depends on what cash you got on hand, and what they charge.

i think what he means is cylinder sleeve....those can be bought for $100ish....cyinders, theyre expensive in my neck of the woods

cylinders are dirt cheap. if you're looking to bore anyway, kyou can get a cylinder for like $50 and then have it bored for less than $100. my machinist does not charge based on how much bore, a 426 is the same cost as a 406.

I've got a cylinder on the bench right now 400 man, it's got some scratches, but can definitely be bored, you want it i'll ship it $40 shipped to your door. If 40 or 50 bucks is worth "saving a bore" for, then by all means, the point i'm trying to make is that's really a non issue if you consider all things motor. the cylinder's can be had all day long for cheap so build the thing the way you want too, don't plan for more bore that's small fry stuff.

If someone wants a 416 or 426 then go for it. I went with a 416 on my first build because after countless research it is generally deemed as the best all around build for the 400EX. When factoring in reliability, power, heat, and how quick it revs it is one of the better builds. Worrying about "wasting a bore" was never an issue and seems silly to me. Does a 416 put out much more power than a 406? Probably not much but I read that Powroll, who was one of the best 4-stroke builders in the country, found that the 416 works the best with the flow of the head, valve size, and resulting combustion efficiency. A 416 is only 2% bigger than a 406 but Powroll claimed it resulted in more like a 10-15% increase in power due to the efficiency mentioned above. Now if true that only equates to around 3 HP but then again we all add pipes, carbs, cams etc... for much more money than a bore costs when those mods don't offer more than 3 HP individually. Do the build right and it will last 99% of us for years.

LOL stickman, I am about 80% sure I am going to buy a 450 this spring but I will keep the 400EX for sure. I could see maybe still riding the 400EX more often but I really want to try a 450 and my biological clock is ticking LOL.

I don't blame ya. I love my 450, but it just isn't as fun on the trails like my 400 is, mostly because it isn't setup for trails. So I'm good with having the all out power for the track and dunes and have the 400 for the trail machine.
