3ed gear out?

So got a guy wanting to trade a R to my ex. But 3ed gear is out. My ex is on a fresh 100 percent new rebuild. I love the old 2 strokes, had a 86 and miss it.
I have yet to go check it out, he says he still rides it, so what scares me is the metal in the trans, or even finding parts to put back in it. Just trying to get some input on this. I like my ex, good power but does not handle for nothing.

If it still sound smooth in the rest of the gears, it might be something in the shift mechanism. Drain the oil and see what it looks like before you buy it! Either way, its got to come apart and have it fixed. Finding transmission gears is not all that hard. There are complete transmissions on ebay, on this website, or you may even be able to find just the gears you need to repair. Pick er up cheap! You cant go wrong with a 250r.
