I pulled the spark plug today, and as with almost every other nut on the bike, it was loose. It looks to me like it was running a little lean to me, so I am going to put a 9Z plug instead of an 8Z plug in there. What do yall think?

It has a UNI filter, along with a Pro Circuit slip on as far as performance mods go. Also still has stock jets in there.

If the airbox lid is still on then put a 160 or maybe a 165 in it if it runs without sputtering. Going to a 9Z won't make any difference, it's just colder plug that helps keep the temps down when running WOT for extended periods of time like desert racing or if you're overheating a lot.

Thanks for the advise! Is that a Honda jet that you are talking about? Where would you suggest that I buy a jet kit from? (I am new to this game)

Also, yes, airbox lid is still on.

Throw the lid away, put a 160 in there.

You can buy jets at the dealer, you need keihin hex type jets. Or you can buy them from www.jetsrus.com You will need a 42 pilot jet and a 155-165 main (gonna have to experiment a bit).

Look at the FAQ thread linked in my signature for more info.

don't throw the lid away, ship it to me or keep it for washing the quad. I always put my lid back on when it comes time to wash. Or if you ride in mucky nasty areas keep the lid on and do what stickman suggests. run a 160ish main.

Sorry, the lid is staying on it. Tho if im out and someone wants to race, the lid is gonna come off for a bit. Haha

Another thing, should I buy the regular kehnin jets or the OEM equivalent jets?
If someone could explain the difference that would be awesome.
Thanks for all your help everyone!

No such thing really as OEM jets, its a Kehnn carb on the 400ex. If you jet it proper with the lid on you won't want to take it off for a race, it'll run lean and
won't be jetted right and probably be slower.

I understand that the jets are not actually made by Honda. If you go to jetsrus they have Genuine Keihnin jets or OEM equivalent jets. I was curious to know what the difference is, and which ones I should go with when I decide to rejet the bike?

Keihin is the OEM jet, just not made by Honda. There should be a K stamped on it, plus it's etched in the carb body.

jetsrus sells 2 jets.

OEM keihin with the star and ones that are just marked with numbers they call oem equivalent. I have a mix of both, all function the same. Buy the cheaper ones.

And no one is stupid enough to literally throw the lid away Ryan. Lets not start this crap again ok.

Thank you, That is what I was curious about. I didnt want to buy a cheaper jet that is a 160 and it really be something different that will throw my tuning out into left field.

down boy! what did i tell you about calling me by my name as if you know me......you can refer to me as awesome if you want!

I was just thinking if he was going to throw it away i'd pay the shipping to have it sent to me, muahaha. Good call on keeping the lid on if you are running through nasty stuff i973eat1. Also if a dealership or a powersports store is anywhere near you it might save you a couple bucks to just pick your jets up individually there. I know the guy in my town is real cool about swapping jets, if i have some off sizes he'll usually just trade me a jet for a jet. Shipping from jetsrus is going to make the cost more than it would be if you went to a dealer or a powersports store.

As long as you're using Keihen or keihen equivelant you will be good. The jets themselves will look identical to a stock main jet, only the hole on the inside will be a different size. If the jet is short or has an adapters, or is round and not hex, then you know you have a different jet style with numbers that will not correspond.

Well, a little update. The closest Honda dealer wants over $8 for one main jet! :eek2: I still have a couple more to call that are somewhat close to me, but if I were to order 2 jets, it would be worth it to just order them from, jetsrus.

what's the name of that honda dealer. I'd love to call them and talk with the parts manager about that. are you in a city or something? my honda shops charge $3.50 a piece.

The name of the Honda dealer is St. Louis Honda. I think it is because I am in a more highly populated area. (I live in STL county) Paying that much for a jet seems ridiculous to me though.
Here is their website, their phone number is in the upper right hand corner. Give em a call

There isn't a link. Is it this place?: http://www.mungenastmotorsports.com/ When I was looking to buy a Rancher AT awhile back this dealer had a Camo '08 Rancher AT with power steering and 500 hours for $8500 and they go for $8250 for an exact same 2013 model right off the show room. I called to see if the price was correct or an error and he confirmed it was correct. Then he immediately tried getting me to come down there to buy it when I live 3 hours away, but he never asked where I lived. I said I'd be there in an hour. I never showed, lol. I found the same model but in an '09 and green with 100 hours for $5500. I'm surprised that dealership sells anything with prices like that and dealers like him.

Sorry, forgot to put a link in there. I was sidetracked. That is the place though. I think that its just that people are dumb enough to not look around is the only way that they stay in business. Their prices are crazy compared to any other place that sells honda motorcycles around here. Example, I was looking for a fuel pump for a Honda metropolitan scooter, and they wanted $88 compared to two other places around that only wanted $75 for it.

Dang, sounds like this place is sky high, i guess if people are paying the prices, they can afford to wait and ask high prices. I've seen variances in our local dealers too. THe one in the town near me is much more willing to cut deals than a few of the others. I remember picking up a 2007 400ex in 2010 and it was $3200 at one place, and the other dealer still wanted $4500 for their overstock. Huge difference in dealer pricing!
