View Full Version : pivotbolt replacment
Hi guys and gals first post on here,
probably a stupid question but i'm after
cutting out my pivot bolt and after a lot of searching
all the replacement bolts seem to be the same diameter the whole way through.
My ex is 2001 and the bolt that I cut out had a step down in diameter in the casing area.
So will the new bolt work? I have ordered the swingarm kit from bossbearings but they don't
sell the bolt so i'm wondering will the new bolt work. The part number for the old stepped bolt brings
up the new bolt so I didn't order bolt till I know it will work.
Thanks from Ireland.

Welcome!
I'm almost positive all the pivot bolts are exactly the same length, diameter, shape, design, etc. Just order one that is for a 2001 400 and it'll fit guaranteed.
Chances are your bolt was worn. They are all the same.

I hate hearing that you had to cut one out. I had to do this to my 400 about 2 years ago...what a pia! The pivot bolt you have found is the correct one, as mentioned yours was worn. Be sure to lube it well when you install and also try to hit it with some grease about once a year. I noticed on my 450 that when it came time to pull the pivot bolt, i sprayed it with pb flaster for weeks prior to pulling it, and it helped greatly. if the bushing is rusted on the bolt though you will have trouble removing it regardless.

if your bearings get too bad they can wear out your engine case! almost happened to me ~8-9 years ago..
Best to check them every ride by checking to see if any play is coming from the bike by standing on it and rocking back and forth.. there shouldn't be any play. If there is you probably have shot pivot bearings, shot carrier bearings, or shot front ball joints & tie rods.

Pics make it hard to tell, but those look like the collars that go into the motor. Those ya need if you cut them up...

Yea, that isn't a stepped bolt, those are the collars that go inside the engine. You'll need to get a swingarm pivot bearing kit and replace them.
yes ,sorry folks on closer inspection I discovered that they are the collars/bushings that fit inside the swingarm but the bolt is worn down between the collars making it hard to tell the difference.I am waiting on a swingarm bearing kit from bossbearings so hopefully I will be covered.thanks again and if I get stuck I will be calling on ye again.
