I can get one for a good price. Has anyone ran one before , is it worth it and how hard?

they are good carbs.. it's been done before a number of times. That carb is probably off a YFZ.. Not sure what makes it more difficult than the 04/05 450r carb install though

we just put one on a stock-ish Z400 and it made a significant difference. We're using the same carb on his Yoshi 450 engine setup he picked up too

That's including a Hinson basket also. It is used but barely and the carb was not a take off, it was bought new.

Was it designed for the 400ex? like a Sparks or something? I'm sure theres some hidden info on that install.. I've never seen it done on an EX so I can't offer much..

That's a pretty decent deal though, I paid $125 for my FCR off a CRF250 and $150 for a Hinson basket seperately within the last 6 months. Both were what I thought of as good deals.

It was originally for a yz426 I believe. Maybe I will get it and see. He said $125 for basket itself.

ehh, just get the basket. you can find similar deal on a fcr usually all the time. they do take a little bit of custom work, (it needs a spacer/reducer on the airbox side). but once tuned in, it will have much quicker response and more snap than the stock carb

I agree. I will most likely get the 450r carb with zr adapter.

About the hinson though, what's the deal with it? Is it worth it?

I highly reccommend not buying the adapter and spending $4 on a 2in rubber plumbing grommet from lowes or home depot.

Theres no carb sanding, no carb glueing and makes it easier to resell the carb in the future.

It simply clamps to the carb then clamps to your intake boot.

The 05 450r carb is best for HP performance and upgrade, the 39 fcr is a throttle response carb better suited for mx.

I have a brand new aluminum adapter if you decide to go with a 450 carb.. Looks cleaner and ups the resale value of the carb when selling to some one putting it on a 400.

Sounds good. Beats the $50 or whatever the adapter is. However I will try to find one with it already first most likely.. Any input on the Hinson basket?

Hinson basket is a nice upgrade but I believe you need the hinson side case cover with it, I dont know for sure tho.

Also nice big clutches are great but for a 400ex the HD tusk clutch kit is really more then anyone needs, I used that for 5 years racing and riding constantly with big paddle tires, 16/36 gear ratios 12/42 ratios and never in 5 years did the clutch ever slip on me.

I have the Tusk HD already. I also use it in my yz450, I do have probs with it in both bikes though, they seem to slip until the clutch is warmed up. After that, it is perfect all day.

the 04-05 450r carb is a 42mm carb, the newer models have a 38 or 39mm fcr carb. "I think"
