View Full Version : Got another 450r, slow build thread

After about 2 years out of racing and 1 year cometely out of quad's, and heavily into diesel pickups instead, i decided to think about picking up another quad, my good friend/nieghbor moved down south 2 years ago and he parted out all his aftermarket parts and had a stock 450r sitting in his shed, i made him an offer and here we are... The quad is an 06 with a fully guesseted and powdercoated frame, +1 stem, hot cams stage 2 and a 13.5-1 JE piston in it.

Here it is right after i got it home, ripped the graphic's off and threw the hood on it off my old race bike
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n63/rollie51/null_zpsbfee1540.jpg

The next morning i went back to my friends house and noticed he had some front hiper's so i picked those up, another friend hooked me up with the front rzr's, lookin like this...
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n63/rollie51/null_zpsdf81654e.jpg

Headed to yet another really good friend of mines after i mounted that up to see what i could buy off of him! Haha, came home that night and slapped a thumb throttle on (came with a twist) rear dwt beadlocks and threw some old rzr's i had lying around on em, some CR high bends, made some AC nerf's fit off an 04, threw the stock jets back in it and ended up with this...
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n63/rollie51/null_zps6acd60fe.jpg

Just today i went to my local dealership and grabbed some OEM graphics, bar pad, oury grips, and a pro taper clutch perch

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n63/rollie51/null_zps5b6a42e2.jpg

Also went ahead and relocated my key...

This is deff not going to be a fast paced build like the ones ive had in the past where it went from stock to national level in a month, this bike is meant for FUN and will probably be sporting the stock suspension until i find a smokin deal on walsh/pep. Either way im excited to have another bike in my garage to play with after work!!!

you goin as extreme as your past builds or doing a budget build?

I'm going to try as hard as i can to keep it mild and reliable....but it all depends on my $ sutuation going forward haha, eventually walsh/pep will be added...hopefully this winter, no real updates but heres a few pics of my past builds...

As promised this build is slow!! So pretty much i decided to drop
Down to C class and race this bad boy bone stock, finished up 1-1 in production C and 5th in open C, it was fun beating some built bikes on a stocker, i rode the wheels off this thing!! but my back hurt after the race for litterally 2 weeks haha

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n63/rollie51/null_zpsa7aaf2e7.jpg

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n63/rollie51/null_zps4c57b6fa.jpg

Decided after that race that over the winter i needed suspension, walsh/pep is just out of the question so ive decided to go a different route and going to try some new set ups, i scored these LSR DC4 a arms, axis rear shock and an LSR dc-6 link
For a song and a dance...

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n63/rollie51/null_zpsef9570f8.jpg

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n63/rollie51/null_zps38aa9788.jpg

Also scored an LSR subframe with no battery box, im going to convert to kickstart this winter, im
Planning on running the stock swing arm unless i can find a deal on a +1 LSR. Plan is to make the whole bike LSR/Axis, in the next month a buddy is selling me his front axis and then i will send them to hygear to be completely rebuilt and gone through, i have a feeling ill love these shocks properly set up just as much as my PEPs

I ran DC4 a arms on my 07 in 07 and i didnt really love them, this new set is off an 04/05 so i will be converting to those spindles, i think that will cure alot of what i didnt like about them on my 07 with 07 spindles, we'll see

Cool part is i dont have to powdercoat anything, which saves me alot
Of $$$

Also sent my resumè up to Steeve at FACTORY43 in Quebec and he is helping me out big time this coming season with nerfs, bumpers, seat covers and everything, he makes really awesome products and is a great guy if your in the market for nerfs or a bumper!
Thats all the updates for now!!!

Hey guys, i was going to get back OUT of it, and build my truck more but i was convinced to keep it, still not sure if thats the right choice....

I did blow the crank a few weekends ago, however while it was running the suspension felt awesome, a little
Soft for me but still good, i got screwed on the axle and found out in the air just how warped it really is, so ill have to find another :/

Money is tight as of right now so my plan is to start buying parts to rebuild the motor by the 1st of the year....

Here it is as soon as i got to the track, looking good lol

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n63/rollie51/null_zpsef709314.jpg

Aaaaaand about 5 laps in i was headed home.

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n63/rollie51/null_zps8382a59b.jpg

Got home and Had a HELL of a time getting the swing arm bolt out, ended up cutting it, and i was so pissed that i took the motor out too haha

http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n63/rollie51/null_zps3005cab5.jpg

Started tearing it down

rolli I'm sure you probably know this, but if not

many times when a race harness is cut down some of the factory ground wires get removed, form the harness
Honda uses several ground wires to have low impedance to ground, when too many are cut out it creates high impedance to ground,
which in many cases creates oxidation at any point of contact, including the pivot area,
a moly coated pivot bolt will insulate the bolt from any transient voltage that causes the oxidation.
but the hidden cause is usually poor grounding...

good luck and I'm sure it will be back in no time

Good to know, thank you!! The harness will be cut down this winter and i usually pull the swing arm bolt out every so often and grease it, although like you suggested moly coating is something ill consider for sure!

Rollie, for being a slow build, looks like you whipped it up quite fast lol! I checked out Factory43's website and I do like the F43 front bumper and the nerfs..I am looking to order both in the next few months, but I didn't see any prices on their page. Those products look like they're put together well and I wouldn't mind trying them out.

Looks really good. Graphics always improve the whole quad, especially full wraps like Spastic and SSI do. My valves are getting worn too, I have to adjust them every year or it won't start for ****, and I only ride it for 3 or 4 15 minutes races a year. So 1 hour of racing and it decides it doesn't want to run anymore.
