The 400 will be easier to ride in the woods. The four stoke will have more ''bite'' in slippery conditions. A two stroke will require alot of clutch work to keep the rpms high.

(mixing gas sucks:rolleyes: )

like they said both quads are great. I myself think 250r's handle great in the woods and trails and they also can fly through some mud also  . The handling on 250r's is unbeliveable so Im thinking maybe thats your best bet?

Lathers is right, the more I think about it, on how good the R does handle on the trails so I say flip a coin you WIN either way!

To tell you the truth I havent rode a 250r at all but im sure their very good machines. But id go with the 400ex because you dont have to mix gas and you have electric start and also 250r's seem to be getting quite expensive now a days. You might be able to get a 400ex cheaper. Also you wont have to rebuild a 400ex as much as a 250r but you can get more performance easier out of a 2-stroke than a 4-stroke well at least its cheaper to make a 2-stroke faster than a 4-stroke. But its just my opinion to get a 400ex but im sure you'd probably be happy with either machine.

Even though the 400 has electric start, r's usually start on the 1st or second kick, hot or cold. My 400 is a pain in the *ss to get going when its cold, even with e-start. You can check that out in a few threads on this site. Your right, j, r's are getting expensive, but they hold their value way better than the 400 does. I bought my 400 new in 2000 for $5900, and I don't think that I'll be able to get $4000 out of it now. It's in perfect shape. The only r you will get now for less than what it sold for in 86-89 is going to be ragged out. The handling on both is very similar, though the 400 seems a little better, probably because it is less powerful (Imo). The choice should come down to wether you want a 2 or 4-stroke.
