I've also read that BP gas is bad - it has too much detergent in it, don't know if it's true or not - but I don't use it.

I use 91 since that is the highest here in Cali without going to get racing gas and it is fine... I have buddies running 110 but there motors are all hookered up....

On a stock quad you dont need to run anything higher the 87 octane. The only thing that the lower octane can do is make you foul plugs more often, I have never fouled a plug in any of my quads or sleds, and all I use is 87 octane. I have checked this with mechanics and a lot of other people and they say its fine. But once you have mods on it run higher octane, or if you want more from the quad start running high octane.

Gotta run the one between 87 and 92...didnt your dealer tell you when you bought your quad, or do you not have one? :huh

dont use BP gas.. it eats away @ your gas tank lol.. gay **** huh.. anyways use 93 or higher.. 400ex's have a lot of torque and need the best gas... later

Oh yea, and dont let yourself think torque has anything to do with what octane you need to run...

93 runs great in mine, and in all of my friends EXs

A stock 400 can run on water. j/k Dont get too excited about which gas to run. Just make sure its a medium grade or higher. 90+ octane. She will run fine. :D

What does octain do that regular gas dosent? Does it give you more speed/torque or anything? or just make it run better?

& what kind would I run on a full system filter, jets and drilled airbox?

OK your assuming from your statement that octain is not gas...

Reg. gas has octain.... Octain is the measurment of how much actual gas is in the mixture or something to that effect.. Have you seen those numbers near the pump that say 87, 89, 91, etc... that is the octain of the gas.. Higher octains run a lot better.. The more you build your motor you need to run higher gas to get it to run right....

Oh yeah and I run 91 in mine and it's fine with the open airbox, K&N, and pipe......

whatever you do...DO NOT spray any wd40 in a 400ex gas tank. It will not help your motor any like my previous posts. Sorry..

Lol Crazy400exMan :D. On a stock quad it is fine to run regular (87 octane). Before you start modding you quad for power etc, start running higher octane. If or once you start modding it with, air filter, pipe etc make sure your running around 92 or better, otherwise its not worth your mods :D. Octane just makes the engine preform better. :) Hope that answered your Q.

You should run at least 91 octane in your 400ex. It will run on 87, but you will run into detonation when it gets hot (this is a bad thing).

Octane is a rating of how much a certain grade of fuel will resist burning. This might sound strange, but in a high compression motor, the fuel and air mixture can get compressed so tightly that it will ignite itself, before the plug fires. This is a very bad thing called preignition, and it will lead to engine damage or failure over time. You want the fuel and air mixture to be compressed as much as possible, and not ignite until the spark plug has fired.

Modified motors generally need higher octane fuel because they have high compression, or advanced timing, two things that can lead to detonation or preignition.
Running good, quality premium fuel will not only make your quad run better, and cooler, but will also make it run for more than a year.

Skemp nailed it, pre-ignition is the killer!

In the Northwest they add high oxygenated fuel mixes during the winter for air quality. These fuels are lean so highest octane may help. Out here 7-11's sell Cenex brand made with gasohol some agriculture co-op corn product or something. This fuel is terrible, runs like @**t in my lawnmower. I like mid grade Exxon or Conaco, full premium is a waste of coins.

we run 104 octance in my 300Ex most of tha time but the only other we run is 93. And as you can see from my signature theres nothin really all that special about it.
