On my cousins 2012 400X, we are looking to add a bit more acceleration. Current mods are HMF Comp series exhaust, jetted with no lid and a UNI filter. Was looking into a sprocket change as going into the motor really isn't what he wants want to do. So was thinking of going to a smaller front or larger rear. My question would be is there a benefit of changing one or the other? I know changing the front by going down a tooth has a more dramatic effect than going up a tooth on the rear. Would going up one tooth in the rear be noticeable? Then there wouldnt be to much top end loss and maybe some acceleration gained. Any thoughts?

typically 1 tooth on the front equates to 3 tooth on the rear. If you go 1 larger in the rear you will notice very little. Try 2 and it should be much more noticable. Also keep in mind if you go to big in the rear you're going to require a longer chain as well as possible skid plate removal.

Good info, didn't think about the chain length. Am thinking that going up 2 in the rear may be the best scenario, better acceleration with minimal top end loss.

Yeah, you can go up 2, that's a good gearing setup, imo. if your chain is not brand new and you've already made some adjustments with it, you should be fine on chain legnth.

Any clue on what kind of gains that would be seen. Like a half a quad length or more/less in a short drag? Should wheelie like a mofo I would think lol.

The main thing I like about gearind down is less clutch work in the woods. My trail 400ex quad is -1 in front and i can roll 2nd much easier instead of having to go from 1st to 2nd everytime i hit a hairpin. I couldn't tell you exactly how much you'll gain vs an equal machine, but you will definitely notice it'll wheelie easier in the higher gears. the 400's are wheelie machines from the factory.

Yes, and with that HMF wheelies are even more frequent.

If you drop to a 36 rear you will get more top end, but in woods where ever its slick or muddy you will be doing alot spinning and not get traction. If you go up to a 39 you will loose top end, but get great traction to pull better through mud and slick area with better traction. Just to let you know.....good luck.

How would going from 13/19 to 13/40 effect mine? Just curious before I change it for drag racing.

13/39 to 13/40 you will loose top end, gain a little traction.

Going down 1 will be enough, you will be surprised. I like running 14/38 for tight woods on the 02' EX
