I ran my quad for the first time afew weeks ago.It ran great, but at the end of the day my clutch started slipping.I have the maguara hydro clutch that worked great as well.I decided to do the neils upgrade clutch. The problem i have is because of the 400ex thicker plate the rod has to move further to engage the pressure plate so i doubled the washer behind the needle bearing but was concerned that it might not allow the clutch pack to fully seat when the clutch was let out.so i ground the extra washer down to the point to where i had the slightest movement in the rod before it started to engage the pressure plate.I get it all back together, fire it up and it dies. The only i could do is to adjust the lever far enough out to where when id put it in gear it wouldnt die,but the lever is to far out for my liking. Is it still an uprade without the 400ex plate? Will i still have better clamping force with the cr500 springs and drain bolt washers than stock? The other thing i noticed when id pull in the clutch, the pressure plate would not come out flush,it would come off the pack kind of cock eyed.Is that normal?Like i said, the hydro clutch worked great prior to doing the upgrade, but idid come across a post from Neil saying that you did have to adjust the cale abit to get it to work with cable style clutch lever.Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Try it with all oem 250r parts. no 400ex plate. jb

I think I'm going to replace the 400ex plate with the original one.I believe that is the root of my problem and keep the cr500 springs and washer for the extra clamping force.I was thinking about just using the traditional cable set.I didn't want to take it apart again because I have to pull the pipe to get the clutch cover off and wasn't looking forward to doing it after putting together

cr 500 springs are weaker than the stock 250r springs, prob not your best bet to run.

Good advice there. The 85-87 springs are lighter than 88-89 use them if you want a lighter pull.

The 250r springs must be stout. In the trx450r world, the cr 500 springs are an upgrade.

I think that's why they add the drain bolt washer between the bolt and the spring. The cr500 springs are slightly shorter than the trx250r springs as well.Ace off the other site said the cr500 springs with washers produce better clamping force than the stock trx250r springs alone.I hope he's right, because that is all I'm trying to achieve.

They have to be, the 250R only uses 5 springs, most bikes and your 450r use 6

good point mx91a, but if i'm not mistaken doesn't the 400ex only use 5, also i believe the kfx450's use 5.
