View Full Version : Who here trail rides their EX?

I did a quick search and didn't find any threads specific to trail riding and most threads here seem to be geared toward racing and stuff...So, I was curious does anyone trail ride their EX? I am all about trail riding, it's all I do actually. Of course, where I live we are so rural that the closest MX tracks to go race at are over 100 miles away and I can't afford the gas and lodging for all that traveling so I go ride in the mountains all day. I love the challenges of riding trails, there is always something different each time; plus I like to show the mouthy guys on 4x4 machines that guys on sporties can ride off road too! In fact, sometimes I wind up going further than they do since my EX is small and can fit in tighter places. Anyway, enough of my babbling. Tell me about your experiences and feel free to post pictures if you like!

I love trail riding my 400ex. I just got back from riding trails in mouintains of tennessee. It was awesome i went everywhere the 4x4 ans side by sides went. Some of the trails was pretty brutal bit the feeling of making it to the top of some of these hills was great.

Here's a few shots of mine on some trails. Also, since atvs can be licensed and used on the roads here, I do a lot of backroads exploring during the winter when all the trails are closed up.

Here's a video from the same day from the pics above. Dang dog jumped in front of me and screwed up my line, that's why I jerked up the side of the drift and bogged down in 3rd. Great way to exercise the dogs but they sure do love getting in the way sometime haha.

Nice.
Are those Maxxis Holeshots you have on there? Pretty wicked looking tires either way. I have Goldspeed SX 6 plys on the rear of mine, haven't got the money for fronts currently, but they are coming as soon as I do! Ones it has now are bald as an old man's head pretty much.

Ill post a pic that I took when I climbed to the top in it. There is only about 2ft of clearance at the top. Around here it's called green mans tunnel. Supposedly haunted?

No I run GBC X Rex's. They are the same thing as Maxxis Razr 2's the brands are even linked privately. There cheap too, I got all 4 of these for $240 shipped. $60 a tire for 6ply tires you simply cant beat it

That's a steal. Will have to look into those when I get new fronts later this summer. It cost about 150 for both of my back ones and those were the cheapest I could find at the time. But, I didn't have the money for fronts but I should soon.

Thanks! And the feeling is mutual, I learned how to ride in the mountains of Montana. I absolutely love it, if my time on earth ever ended riding my quad up in the mountains I love, that would be A-Okay. :)

Gotta love tire gremlins! This was from a ride a few months ago but I punched a pretty good sized hole in my right rear...3 tire plugs and 2 cans of Slime later I had it to the point where it held some air for a short while but needed to be aired up various times throughout the day.
http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/1980JeepCJ5/546120_10200327168154615_1297387438_n_zpsdf78b10d. jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/1980JeepCJ5/media/546120_10200327168154615_1297387438_n_zpsdf78b10d. jpg.html)
Here I am fixing it.
http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/1980JeepCJ5/529429_10200327172994736_806103673_n_zps7168e85d.j pg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/1980JeepCJ5/media/529429_10200327172994736_806103673_n_zps7168e85d.j pg.html)
And later on up the trail had to add some more air. I highly suggest investing in a portable air compressor that plugs into a cigarette lighter plug. The Grizzly rider I was riding with had one on their machine so I got lucky! This is the reason I got new tires, Goldspeed SX 6 plys, went all out. As rocky as the terrain gets around here having a thick walled tire is a must. I can let all the air out of those tires and have all the grip in the world too. Love em!

Thanks! And trust me, I will! Soon as I get my 400 up and running again I am gonna go hit some trails and be taking pictures like crazy and hopefully get a few videos in. These moments I've had riding my EX are some of the best of my life, I don't ever want to forget them. Going to get the best out of it while I am still young and healthy too, I love to ride. If I could get paid to go trail ride I'd be rich by now haha.

Sounds like a time! Waiting to get my quad back is killing me, this time of year is perfect to ride too, fire danger is way down, the land is lush and green and the dead summer heat isn't here just yet. If I don't have it going by the end of June I think I will be pulling my hair out!

Not too many places to ride here in southern PA (near the maryland border line). There's a few places, but their pricey and they only have mx tracks.

My wife and I have riden our 400ex's for years on only trails. They are great trail bikes. I would recommend them to anyone.

I now also have a 700xx and it is amazing on the rutted terrain but it is a bit wide for the tight trails.

Yes they are, I honestly never understood the appeal of utility atvs for recreational riding. I ride my old man's Grizzly 660 from time to time and just get so bored with it. No gears to shift, no jumping, no sliding, no wheelies and just zero fun factor. It's more of a challenge riding that heavy pig and more time is spent on keeping it from tipping over than actually having fun it seems like. I just love to zip around on my EX and have a ball. Only time I could ever see myself on a utility quad is in deep snow trails or for doing chores around the house.

No fun in that haha. Yeah, a lady friend of mine is like that, absolutely convinced she must have 4 wheel drive or the quad would be "useless", so far, I've gone more places on my EX than she has and made it look easy. I like getting muddy and especially getting the quad muddy, they look awesome that way!

This wasn't exactly on a trail, back behind an abandoned sawmill there's a few places I go ride and climb steep hills. Not really supposed to go back there I guess but they haven't put up any gates or signs yet so I will keep doing it!

And lastly, here's what I pack with me in the woods. Glock 17, there's been lots of bears and mountain lions out this year so best to play it safe. I'd rather have it and not need it than not have it and need it.

Very nice! Yeah, powerline roads are fun and those hills look sick! That trail I posted above was part of a powerline trail and I was preparing to go down the hill. Another part of the riding area has a real steep powerline hill that I didn't climb due to not having back breaks or I would've climbed that. Just climbing steep stuff with only front brakes can get a little too adventurous for my taste!

Hey man i got a few questions about wellsville. Do you have to have plates and have your quad registered? I dont have insurance, plates or even a eegistration sticker or anythibg. My dad wants to take his gatorvwhich is one of those new 50hp ones and itd get around just fine but he cant register it either its farm use.

HondaRacing83, no registration of any kind is needed to ride at Wellsville. It is pretty much anything goes there including offroad buggies and big 4WD trucks/jeeps etc... I have only been there twice so I don't know a lot about it but all the regulars suggest having someone who is familiar with the place to show you around for the first time. There are numerous cliffs and huge hills that you would not want to go down as sometimes that is the only way back up. I don't know much about the gator but it may be fine or it may not. The hills, rocks, and mudholes at Wellsville are quite a challenge, it is very extreme. Of the 9 guys on my first trip half are scared to go back, the other half say it is a once-a-year kinda trip for them and I have been back already within a month. It kinda scares me and fascinates me at the same time...

quadmanw, I definitely recommend it as a place to check out. As I said above, it is not for everyone and some like it and some hate it. If you are a good rider and like a good challenge I think you would like it. One cool thing is even if someone is not real adventurous themselves you can watch others who try some crazy sh*t and that is part of the experience. The pace is rather slow because of the technical riding, hills, and mud holes and overall I prefer trails I can haul *** on but it is a neat experience.

I definitely recommend having a guide or following another group around because someone could get in serious trouble if they go down the wrong trail.

ya, i wanted to do the powerline park AWRCS's thats tomorrow, but the guys i normally go to the races and race with are going to the poker run.

not to mention, my g/f runs a charity event and thats tomorrow night and its jsut easier to go to the poker run and get back for htat than going to the race and getting back, so the poker run it is.

chronic, when I was younger and still racing MX I thought trail riding was boring. But in reality I never really tried trail riding and just kinda pictured putting through the woods. When I retired from racing I didn't ride for several years and now that I have gotten back into riding and have been traveling around to visit some different riding places I wish I would have found these when I was younger! I have found other ways than racing to challenge myself because I still have the competitive side and doing some hill climbs or slamming some trails at full speed XC style while pushing my buddies has been a blast. And you are correct the trails in the above pics are a challenge for even the best riders, if you want search Wellsville in youtube and there are some sick climbs that Luke, preacher, and catfish, and others are doing on quads.

Trail riding has always been where it's at for me. I raced dirt bikes off and on in the past just for the heck of it, but my real kick was heading down the trails in the woods. i especially love it on my 400EX, it is an exceptional trail riding machine. Friend of mine has a 660 Raptor and kicks my ***** out on the gravel road, but in the woods is constantly spinning out and getting stuck because it has so much power. 400EX may not be that fast, in fact it is quite slow (my old CR230F was faster) but you really come to appriciate it in the woods, it just seems to belong there.

My 400EX with a menacing storm cloud in the background. We got caught in it heading back out and soakd to the skin, driving torrential rain and hail, and I was the only one wearing a helmet! Sucks for those other guys haha.

Heading back up the gravel road, we stopped at that guy's house to ask if we could ride on his land but nobody was home. I was in a hurry to get ahead of the storm but there's no such thing as going fast when you are riding with 2 slow atv riders!
http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/1980JeepCJ5/969584_209522645872771_1678070563_n_zpsed7f8441.jp g (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/1980JeepCJ5/media/969584_209522645872771_1678070563_n_zpsed7f8441.jp g.html)
And lastly, the 3 machines all parked together. After we all went home and got dry clothes on we went out one more time to do some exploring. Not really any actual trail riding shots, most the places to ride around here are gravel roads so that is what I do a lot of. All the good trail riding areas are 60 miles or more away.

OZ-T you've got some beautiful countryside where you're at. I envy the mountain views you must get from some of the lookouts. Around here trail riding is the most popular thing to do. While we don't have big mountains we do have enough foothills and valleys to make for some great trails.

Trail riding is different things to different people. I remember taking a friend out who had never been to an ATV park. He was trail riding at home in his own woods, and while he called it trail riding, he was not aware of what trail riding was actually like until he hit some of the real trails and hills that we have around here. I've found that trail riding aggressively is probably the most physically and mentally demanding way to ride an ATV. Sure MX is tough and you've got to have some balls on the big jumps, but try shooting the woods for over an hour at a grueling pace....it's exhausting!

I agree, thing about trail riding that I've observed in 15 years of riding is that the trails always have new challenges each time you ride them it seems like. Around here it's most prominent in the spring after the heavy snows and windstorms that knock lots of trees over. Some days we spend more time clearing the trails or hopping over downed trees than doing any relaxed riding. There are some hills I climb that 4 wheel drive trucks never go near, it's kinda amazing where these little 2x4 quads will go if you are determined enough.

It pretty much was, the whole mountain is private property, but on the tops there are radio or cellphone towers and they have to keep the road in decent shape so maintenance crews can drive their trucks up there. Some of the fire roads we went on after I snapped these pics were a little more challenging however. We may go back up this weekend and I will try and get some more pics then.

Also, one last thing I wanted to ask. My axle is bent a little on the left side and the tire wobbles quite a bit. Will this cause any damage in the long run? I put a new bearing carrier and used axle in it (didn't know it was bent) but the bearings still roll fine and I've ridden it pretty regularly for about a month now and haven't had a issue. I wanna see if someone can straighten it for me, just don't have the money for a whole new axle at the moment. Thanks all!

as cheap as i see stock axles going for, you should try to find a straight one cheap, it will wear more on your bearings no doubt. also it will cause the chain and brake rotors to move more than they did before. depending on how bent it is, it will be hard on the chain, sprockets, and brakes.

as cheap as i see stock axles going for, you should try to find a straight one cheap, it will wear more on your bearings no doubt. also it will cause the chain and brake rotors to move more than they did before. depending on how bent it is, it will be hard on the chain, sprockets, and brakes.

I found one new on service honda for 201. Where do I find them cheaper? No used ones will work, that's what I have now and it was allegedly supposed to be straight and wasn't at all.

you can find a used stock axle that's straight, not everybody will try to screw you. People replace axles all the time. Honestly keep an eye out in the classifieds and on ebay and you can get one for under $100 all day long. For $201 you can get an aftermarket adjustable width axle by g force.

I dare say 400s are kings of the trail. No they arnt as fast as a 450 but trails arnt about top speed. They are technical which is where the 400 is great they have torque for days so they can lug through gear not just have to be topped out like 450s.

They are the best all around sport quad in my opinion, can do a little bit of everything. I love them for trail riding, some days I wish I had a faster more powerful machine, but I don't as soon as I hit the trails. A friend of mine has a Raptor 660 and because it has so much power, he frequently spins out and gets stuck in rocky areas while I just idle over all that crap like nothing.

My brother made it to the top of the backbone on a stock TRX90. That was about 11 years ago, don't think he could do it now with the ruts as big as they are from the trucks.

Seriously, the backbone is an extremely tame hill if you can avoid getting hung up on the rocks. I've seen a guy go up it in reverse on a Grizzly 600.

You want to ride a real hill, go to Kentucky, Tennessee or West Virginia. They aren't hills, they are mountains.

Where I ride the hills like this are usually covered in loose rock, they are real intense to go up. Gotta have good tires all the time! I am glad I had mine over the weekend, had to downshift on one of those hills and nearly came to a complete stop, gunned it and spun and clawed my way to the top, barely made it!

I use to climb some knarly stuff, steepest and worse were the Badlands in Attica, IN. I climbed this one that my buddy that climbs everything
on his Banshee wouldn't try. The next guy tried and pretty much totaled out his quad when he didn't make it. Yrs. later I crashed down a hill and got
busted up bad....I still climb but I gotta look at it for a long while and then sometimes I pass, getting to old I guess. But I trail ride yr. round except
when the hayfever gets too bad. This weekend we headed for the "Laketon Bog" for a ride along the river, have a cookout and pick and eat
some paw paws from the trees. Probably get out one of the ATC's. With gas prices we don't get down to the Badlands much anymore, and
Haspin acres was getting so rutted up haven't been back there in years.

They were about to make a lot of trails on Sidling Mountain near Hancock, Maryland for trucks, suvs, atvs, and everything. But all these idiots already are protesting because it would "ruin the town."

Yeah right. Freakin people now adays. It'll bring money to the town because there is a lot of people that want trails and all that to ride their vehicles on.

That's tree huggers for ya, they will stop at nothing to restrict and close offroad areas. They tried that on national forest land up here a few years back and closed a bunch of our trails, all of us banded together and sued the Forest Service to get the trails back open and it worked! Sometimes you just gotta fight hard.

But I will also say that for myself I have a hard time enjoying the view when I am riding. I have tried going slow and enjoying the scenery but I get bored quickly when I am not pushing the pace. I trail ride my EX all the time, here in Arizona the trails are rocky in the local area's, and forestry up north. So I ripped off all my plastic gaurds and replaced them with aluminum (Swingarm, central frame, and A arms). Definitely the best investment i've made in my quad so far, I never realized how many times you can hit rocks with your swingarm, and that plastic just wouldn't last long at all.

Stickman400
10-25-2013, 12:25 AM
When I bought my 400 brand new back in '05 I managed to rip the stock plastic skid off of the swingarm in about 10 minutes of riding on my local trails. And not just one part, the ENTIRE thing got ripped off. The only thing that was still on was where the bolts were holding it on. I immediately replaced it with a Pro-Armor that lasted up until last year when I installed the GT link and had to get their skid.

Man, what a great weekend to ride….the weather was literally perfect! I did get the bearings installed in the new carrier and got it all put back together. It was my first time so it took me a lot longer than expected, but I know it will go much quicker next go around. I also adjusted the valves for the first time. Likewise, it took a little longer than expected but after I did it a second time (to get it just right) it was much quicker. I bought my first house early this year and unfortunately it doesn't have a garage so I'm stuck under the porch (walk out basement) doing all the work on my quad, which doesn't make things any quicker. A man needs a good garage.....guess I'll have to wait a few more years when we move.

At first when I joined this site I didn’t understand the seemingly obsession with mods…..the 400ex felt fast enough stock to me. But being out on the trails and doin some drag racing with other 400’s made me want to get more out of my motor so I’m excited to do a few simple, yet effective mods this winter.

No problem, not only do the leaves cover up some of the obstacles as you mentioned but they are damn slippery too! Some of the hills were about impossible the first few tries until the leaves were flung off the path.

Stickman and exrida, since both you guys have 450's and 400EX's I want to ask your opinion. Do you think it is obvious that a 450 is better for aggressive hill climbing? I am thinking of going to a 450 next year mainly for attacking steep hills with short runs. The guys I ride with keep their motors near stock and last weekend I rode my buddies '05 450R and it didn't pull much harder than my built 416EX in 1st and 2nd gear. And since all climbing is done in 1st or 2nd gear I am now questioning if it really is worth it.

i don't mean to sound like a trader here Blodg, but the best hill climber in my garage is my yfz with stock chassis. That thing will climb the best hills as long as you can get it cranking by the time you hit the hill. On flat ground or regular woods riding it tends to skate around in the rear too much, but on the hills ya can't beat the yfz in my opinion.

A stock 05 450r is a dog, your 416 will most likely be faster. The gen 1 450's really need to be uncorked before they start to put down power. 400's have plenty of power to climb, and if setup right all of these machines can climb. 06+ have a slightly longer swingarm which will help with keeping the front down during hillclimbs. This is why i like my yfz so much in the woods and on hills, because it's got a longer stance and will keep the front wheels down much better than my 400 or my 450r.

Thanks for the input. One of the "expert" hill climbers does ride an '08 YFZ450 with just a pipe and he loves it. He and the TRX450R guy are always getting on each other about which quad is better and who climbs more/bigger hills. He wanted me to try riding his YFZ after I rode the 450r but I didn't take him up on it. He also claimed he has to mess with his valves way less than his buddy on the 450R. Both guys motors just have gearing and exhaust and these guys climb insane hills that usually only bikes with extended swingarms go up. But of course like most aspects of riding they are extremely skilled which is more important than which quad they are on.

Stickman400
11-06-2013, 01:57 PM
Mine's an '06, but it's also got a Walsh Savior swinger, so it sits a little lower and I think it's a tad longer than a stock '06 swinger. It's also got a pipe and filter. If the hills are very steep with a short run in, the 450 is the machine you want. But other than that I prefer my 400, but if hills start getting long and fairly steep, you HAVE to have the 400 built, or it won't pull the gearing, it'll start losing steam and you'll be stranded half way up the hill. I've never seen a hill on my 400 and thought "Man, if I had just brought my 450 I'd try that" I always just go for it and have more than enough power to make it, just gotta be crazy enough on some of the hills I've done.

If I could chime in I have a 400 with high comp piston geared 16/38 on 22s I have never had a hill climb problem. IMO the 400 is a dam near a tractor I hit most hills in second gear and I have yet to find a hill I couldn't do in first. My cousin has a trx and he's had problems on hills with a 16t front. They just don't have the low end.

The steepest hill I ever climbed was with a 400EX...think it was a 416 with 1.5" longer swinger. I liked the 14 tooth front and 39 rear for hill climbing, usually 3rd gear....alot is with the gearing. At the badlands I have been very impressed with guys riding YFZ, however one long nighmare hill I will never climb, I saw a guy on a 450R go up.

Especially since yesterday i rolled my quad down a crazy hill. Rolled 5 times somehow i got in front of it then it slammed on me and continue rolling. Pretty crazy wreck

Damn dude, I take it you're all right? Is quad OK? Yes climbing big or steep hills is scary, when I rode with Luke and Sam I did the mediocre stuff and watched them do the insane stuff. But it does get the adrenaline pumping and is fun to climb although I still like to blitz the trails where a lot of the serious climbers don't trail ride hardly at all. So you are close to Wellsville? Over 3 hours for me to get there, I wish it was closer so I could go more often to learn my way around.

At the badlands I have been very impressed with guys riding YFZ, however one long nighmare hill I will never climb, I saw a guy on a 450R go up.

on the backside of the dunes? i know the one you're talking about it's gnarly, look worse from the bottom though, i went up to the top of it and then came down and got a good feel for the hill, not as bad as it looks. The best hills out there are the ones in the dune area that go up steep and then at the top it's about a 10ft straight wall so you have to get a real good run before you hit the wall.....then after you clean the wall you literally drop right off onto the dirt road. It's tricky you can either catch huge air going over the top lip and land funky, or you can just pull the clutch in at the wall and coast over that thing, a very awesome and scary feeling when you cut the power right at the steepest part of the hill to avoid catching akward air over the lip.

rida, I know exactly what you mean. I usually err on the safe side and launch it. I have seen many hill climb fail videos on YouTube where the guy simply let off the gas too soon and stalled before the lip. When I rode with the expert climbers for the first time a few weekends ago they all went up a short, steep hill and were waiting for me. I pinned it and got about 4 or 5 feet above the lip and came down to a stop on all fours at the top. They all started cheering and hooping it up and I realized they thought I did that on purpose! All I was trying to do was make damn sure that I made it LMAO.

I think its on what would be the south side....if you go up and then down you would be almost to the creek....or if you traveled back to the back gravel pit where the 2 culverts are, before you would get there turn off to the right an go down a little...few steep hills then the big one, it was really chewed up and rutted out. Back in the day I remember the steep walls on everything.....man they were fun to jump off, now last several yrs. everything is worn down in the pits.

Lol, we had a few hills like that around here. Only me a 2 of my friends ever made them. We all usually launched off the lip and it flung us over the top and we landed perfectly at the top. A few of them you could pop a wheelie half way up and then carry your front tires over the wall section and over the lip and then your back end just rode up the wall and over the lip and it was like going up a normal hill. It was sketchy after a while though when they started getting washed out and the wall was more than 6' long. Then you would risk bottoming your frame on the wall and just bouncing off of it and rolling back down. Then you HAD to jump it, or you wouldn't make it. That was the stuff that got the adrenaline pumping back in the day back when I was in high school. That and freestyle. I couldn't get enough of it, it was like a drug, I'd do damn near anything on my 400 to get that feeling.

Yeah man I'm good surprisingly. Helmet probably save my life. Fox comp 5 riding boots saved my ankles. Steering stems bent on the quad, bars are bent, and clutch levers bent but my wrap around handguards pretty much saved all my controls.
Yeah im about 1hr and 45 min from wellsville and wanna go but havnt went. Im only like 40min from hillsville

Lucky! All my trails are snowed in this time of year so I am parked for the winter, I still ride the county roads but they get boring as all hell. Those are some nicely groomed and fast trails too, wish we had more of those around here. The ones we got are so washed out, rocky and rutty from heavy use you just can't go blasting through them like you could 20 years ago. Frickin utility quads raise hell with stuff I tell you.

I just got a go pro hero 2.....love it, when I download they are so clear!!! I download to you tube by our computers iMovie but you tube comes out fuzzy....why? I see some videos that are clear and others like mine not so clear.....someone told me to use Vimeo and I did but no dice. Yours looks pretty clear so can i ask what the secret is?

Heres my KTM chasing my son on the 406ex....he came back with his wife to slow ride....and wasn't wearing a helmet, ya I gave him heck for it too the whole time we were there....next time I'll take the keys, but I think he got the message....we weren't going to fast because this was the first fall ride and the trails weren't too defined yet.....hey we got 5" of snow coming our way sat......can't wait to ride in that!!!

Lol we are definitely going back there in the spring/ summer. My friend that was taking the video was getting stuck on everything, but the things that he was getting stuck on I wasnt. My other friend has a Grizzly and likes to go mudding... Ill see how good the 400 does with that!

Sounds like there are a few of us that live in the Columbia area. We should get some ppl together for a group ride sometime. I've only ridden at Finger Lakes once, last year, but do most of my riding at Potawatomi in Fulton as I only live 3 miles from there.

Another good vid I took today, even catches my friend wiping out at the end! Was a good day, I am so stoked to come back to this place and ride during the summer. Riding the sled trails is fun, but can sure turn into a giant pain in the rear sometimes if that snow gets soft or you run off the tracks into the powder that is about 5 foot deep.

Am keeping my 400, but want something for faster trails and areas I ride where I find the 400 lacking in power. And I've wanted a Banshee since I was 6 years old anyway. :D
