Using steering wheel puller to split cases?

Hey guys...before I sink 60 bucks or so into a case splitter, I have ran across a bunch of people using a steering wheel puller from HF in order to pull the cases apart...The 400ex's stator side comes off in one big piece....Can you use these, or is the bolts too far apart too use one of these?
