98 300EX problems. HELP!

Brother was running his 300EX over the weekend. It was about out of gas. when he finally brought it in to fill it up it was sputtering. We refilled it and it done the same thing. So the sputering is something else. It will idle but it wont rev at all. Its like the rev limiter is on. Is there any switches that makes teh engine cut out when engaged? Or is there any other ideas what could be wrong? I thought the carb may have gotten dirt in it since it was ran down so low. So I totally cleaned the carb. HELP!!!

since maybe he let it run out of gas did he turn on the reserve and forget to take it off? I don't know if that will make it sputter but maybe. Anyone???

yeah its on. Its weird, it idles fine but when you hit the gas it sounds like it is goverened. :(

I would clean out that carb again, and maybe the tank too.

I just had this problem.. my 300ex just blew up when my throttle got stuck.. and it revved so high, i cracked my piston and valves.. anyways before it blew up, i noticed that i was about out of gas and i went to refill and it still sputtered.. maybe u need to clean the carb or rejet.. . try a new spark plug (splitfire or NGK)

Check the connections to the coil, the little round cylinder with 2 or three plugs in it, its right under the front left fender. Mine did that when a connection was loose.
