is it possible for proffesional painters to actually paint plastics a whole new color? my cousin insists on it but i would think that the paint would chip off.

It will chip and look like crap
Not allways true, but does happen a lot.
Do a search there were two good ones not too long ago on this stuff. One was paint and the other clears

Well for the most part it will...I heard some cases where if you use special additives, etc it will last, but going through all that trouble isn't worth it then.

On a wheeler no matter what you put in the paint to make it flex if you bend it around far enough or kink it it will crack and chip. Rippinitup is right though you HAVE to use special additives with it so that it will flex but it only will only flex so far. I've done at least a dozen hoods with automotive paint (not the stuff you get in a spray paint can) for sleds with no problems of paint chipping off or cracking but they aren't flexing as much as your fenders do...

Well worth it is a personal thing. To me no its not worth it cause I "ride" my quad and not allways rubber side down so I see it all as a waste, but there are lots of guys who dont see roost or rocky trails and ride in sand etc and you will see alot of custom painted Banshee's out there that have a lot of time into the paint work.
Now I buy all the materials well below wholesale (I sell this stuff everyday) and could paint my quad for almost nothing (ok I could do it for nothing but my time) and am not considering painting the plastics cause I dont think the end product and how the quad gets used would mix well. Thats just my opinion and there are some excelent newer prods out there but if you have to pay for the materials and worse yet the labor you would be better off getting new plastics.
So I guess its a matter of prefference and how you use your machine.

My brothers plastics are painted on hid lt230 and is holding up great....Ill try to find out what the guy who painted them used....
MaTT....
dont do it..this was on my friends ex when he bought it....its sad to look at it
what if you take it to a special painter that paints like corvettes or someone who paints fiberglass. i was just thinking about that yesterday. if u do it tell us how it works out.
There was another thread like this on clearing plastics etc and you should search it out cause it answers a lot of these questions etc.
there are paints and or additives that will help (flex additives and special bonding clears to help paint stick to plastic etc) but as far as auto type paints I am familiar with there isnt any that are gonna flex as much as your plastics will in a roll over.
Most times the plastics dont survive 100% and have battle scars where the bigger bends were.

Basically, if you crash a lot, don't paint your plasics. lol
I wouldn't even consider it on a MX or XC quad. I'm doing it on my dune R. To do it right (prep, additives, paint, clear, done by a shop that knows what they are doing) can easily cost you as much as a full set of plastics (fullbore, not maier). So if you are thinking about doing it to save money or avoid buying new plastics, DONT! lol

Every one that i have seen on the trails look like crap. If you have ever used armorall on your plastic, DO NOT DO IT!!! a friend bought ground effects for his camaro, the plastic was black and he didn't have the money to paint them right away so he used armorall to shine them up, when he finally got them painted it wouldn't stick for nothn.

LMAO
Thats funny but not as rare as you might think. People who dont know about this stuff have no idea of the products that will destroy a paint job, and sometimes you dont even need to put it on the car cause it just gets into the air and bam its trashed.

They got a flexin agent you add to the paint so it wont chip so easy,Its the same stuff they use on street bike plastic,a body shop or bike shop should know more about it.

I clear coated my 400 and you would have to take the plastic off and try to fold it in half to make it chip off. If you get the right stuff it is pretty durable. I just used PPG clear w/ a flex additive. and if you prep your plastics right it will adhere to it good. I thought it was worth the work. It took about twelve hours but it was raining outside so it was hard to spray and my plastics looked like someone dragged it behind a truck on the pavement so it took a long time to sand out the big huge scrapes. If I had a set of plastics that were in good shape and it was a nice day it would probably only be three hours for front and rear. I will try to get pics. It looks bad *****

I will be in your neighborhood in two weeks and would be happy to help you with the fold it in half test :D

thanx for all the in-put guys. i know a painter that'll do it for virtually nothing but im not exactly a "tires to the ground" type of rider so i probably wont get it painted. but I was just curious how Brian deegan got his painted to match his cammo gear, and it looked like he bought them like that.

Deegan (well, his sponsors rather) can afford to repaint his plastics after every crash!

i don't think that deegan's plastics are painted. but im not completely sure. Fred Andrews got some camoflauge plastic made for the last gncc race from the company that makes the camoflauge plastic for the atvs. again im not completely sure if this is what deegan did to his, but it would make more sense than painting plastics.
