I know there are a few more of you out there, I'm trying to see what you guys think of the one in the new dirtwheels (if anybody still reads dirtwheels).
I'm excited that the guy seems to want to make some e start kits as they essentially no longer exist. I know I would be interested, and I think it would make this a much more common build if people didn't have to worry about the kickstart and all the issues that come with it as far as the swap goes. Perhaps even boost it's popularity enough for Honda to finally figure out that this is a bike that people would want.
So basically I'm just curious who's still on here and what you guys think about it

Starting is one of the main reasons I haven't put my 650r motor in here. The extra fab work would be worth converting from the "l" if an electric starter wasn't so danged expensive. Of course the fact that Honda no longer produces the engine doesn't make it any more attractive either.

yeah I saw that and posted at the end of page4.....Apparently he got the LAST E-start from a company in Switzerland ???

So he's gonna replicate it and make it available to all us other XR650R guys!!!

HONDA should have made this QUAD right from the start and NOT like how they made the 700XX

They already had the motor.....but instead dumped a ton of funds into the 700xx development....the JAPANESE take pride in the GUNG HO method of manufacturing....but apparently it doesn't apply to recreational Vehicles....Meaning use as many parts from other models to make NEW models....why re-invent so many parts and have so many SKU's

my 2 cents

The 700xx is all about baja and to compete with the Outlaw IRS. Honda doesn't care about making a big bore race quad. The liability doesn't outweigh demand. They tend not to do anything they don't need to do or take risks. Yamaha is the progressive company that will take the risks and even though I own a Honda, the YZF450R/X looks like the bike to own since I believe in supporting a company that supports the rider.

my buddy has an 06 trx450r that launched the motor this season ice racing. So instead of fixing the motor, he is converting his quad to something like the one in Dirt Wheels. His quad is all set up top notch anyway, made since for him rather than building an entirely new quad. He found a guy locally that had a motor, and is hoping to have it done in time for our annual Glamis Ride at Thanksgiving. We both have been talking about doing the switch for years, his motor crashed so he pulled the trigger. Pretty exciting really. He lives about an hour away from PINIT, so I know he is involved too...

Outside of the guy who wants to make the kit, I don't really see any realistic options for an e start. I don't really mind kicking it over as long as my tuning is good enough. It would just be really nice when I'm in the process of tuning:chinese:

Do these things kick hard, are they temprmental or is it tough to make the kicker work in the quad?

It takes a full kick to fire the motor and the kick shaft is way low on the engine. The kicker hits the foot peg and stops just short of a full swing

Yes, the kicker is the biggest problem with the swap. I built mine about 5 years ago now and still haven't found a good, easy solution to get it perfect. Of course, there's a lot of other issues with the build but getting it to consistently fire up is a difficult task, in large part due to the kicker.

A little off topic, but I'm curious if any other 650 owners have had troubles with their oil check valve. My oil tank drains into the motor whenever I let the bike sit for a day or so, as if the check is stuck open. I've had this happen before, and I took it apart and cleaned all the pieces and it worked for about a year, and now it's back. I'm putting together a bored and stroked motor that I'm going to swap in, and I don't want to blow a seal in my new stoker

Try a cr125 or cr80 kickstart.

it should be small enough to get a full kick, the only issue is the first part of the kick might be a bit tough but once you get it going it should kick through easily.

I would not want to try to start my 650 with a minibike kick starter. I've suffered enough.

Agreed. On the topic of kickstarts, does anyone have one that occasionally slips? Every once in a while, I'll really lay the wood down on it and it'll creak and slip, and only go about half a kick. Then if I roll it through, the next kick is perfectly fine. It seems like it's always happening at the start of the compression stroke as well. I'm guessing it's either the springs on the starter gear, or maybe the ratchet gear is worn. I haven't had this motor apart past the top end, and I don't want the one I'm building to do the same thing, so I want to know what to look for.
