Engine missing?

I have a 2000 400ex, and it just started doing this recently. When I start it cold it misses alot and usually kills. It just doesn't idle evenly anymore. It basically sounds like it keeps wanting to die every few times it fires, unless I keep gassing it. Could this maybe be a sign of a needed valve adjustment or possibly just a new spark plug?

try changing your plug. im running an NGK ....7 instead of the stock NGK .......8..it runs a little hotter and seemed to make mine run a whole lot better.

I should probably also add that I just recently put on a k&n with outerwears, and went up to a #40 pilot and #152 main. But my quad was definitely doing this before I did the upgrade. Any one else have any input?

I have almost the same setup as you and i was having the same problems. When i pulled the plug it was jet black. As soon as i put a new plug in everything was fine again. But if you have the money or are capable of doing it yourself you should check your valves just to be sure.

Yeah, my plug was charcoal black when I looked at it today. I'm going down to a #150 main and I will check my valves myself via the d-i-y adjustment in the ex tech section.
