Well I am wanting to put together a nice power adding combo on the 400. I am debating on whether to order a cam, and the two cams I am debating on is a Hot Cam stage one and Sparks drop in cam. Not sure the differences in the two cams so any info on that would be helpful. There will be no other internal mods to the 400 as I want to keep it reliable and not spend much more money. Other mods will be a slip on with filter and lid off, and a Sparks timing key. Is a cam worth it if I'm not going up n compression etc?

stage 2 hotcam ;)

Drag race a 450, then install a hotcam stage 2, then race again.

Youll be happy.

I have a hotcam stage2 and a White Brothers MX cam if you're interested in a used cam...

Sparks key honestly is pointless. I put one in one and I honestly felt it did nothing.

Stage 1 cam is not worth it, power drops off WAY to early. Stage 2 hotcam, dont bother with the sparks 10 bucks says its an XR400 cam anyways.

Going up in compression would yield the single best power. Pistons 150 bucks, 300 bucks for cam and piston and you will have quite alot more power.

So a stage 2 cam would be good for a trail machine?

Totally agree. The stage 1 power falls off fast.

Stage 1 cam in a buddies 416 11:1 sucks honestly. Mine which is all same mods basically but a 407 will walk all over his 400 in every rpm..

You wont want a sparks key with a higher comp piston either. They create a ton of unneeded heat and more power can be achieved with a cam..

If you dont want the stage 2 hotcam, look into webcams. I'm sure the sparks cam is very good too.

Will I lose any low end by going with the stage 2 hotcam?

Shouldnt lose much if any at all.

Basically if you want more power there are only 2 things that wake up this engine: Good all around cam and a higher compression piston.

I hear ya CJM. Honestly I dont' think the 400 is really that slow, just needs a lil more ooomph............lol. I like the way it delivers it's power.
