I currently ride a blaster but I'm old enough to move into the adult class soon. I'm really liking the idea of a hybrid as I love the light feel of the blaster but i want something bigger and more powerful. One guy last year moved from a 250 raptor to a yz250f/yfz hybrid and he said he loved it as it was light and really powerful and he beat most of the 450 too! I was thinking of a ltr450 frame with a crf250, kx or a ktm 250, but would the ltr be a bit on he heavy side or would throwing out the engine and all that **** would it be as light as anything?

in my opinion ltr's are like a rolling tank haha get a 250r chassis and convert to 4 stroke power like you were saying

also dont see a 250f beating any 450's out there just saying but those hybrids are awesome

A 250R would be my dream quad for sure man!BUT unfortunately there really hard to come by in Ireland and when they do come up there all big money. What about a yfz or 450r frame as they too are in plentiful supply over here lol.

I reccomend a 400ex frame with your choice of motor.

400ex parts are cheap and easy to come by.

I put together a whole 400ex hybrid frame for less then $700 usa dollars.

I put my $500 cr250 motor in it and have a quad way more bad az then anything around here.

This is built for drag racing so I didnt need plastics and heel guards, nerfs...etc.

but still for a pieced together from ebay build I made out like a bandit!!!!

400ex geometry is really impressive as well.

Its up to you really but this is a easy well known frame to use as a baseline for custom building.

I picked up the frame and subframe for $150, a arms and spindles for $132, complete 450r swinger with axle/hubs for $230.

I love ebay:blah:

what 450r parts fit the 400 and is the frame the same for all the years?

all swingarm parts are interchangeable as far as I know.

Hubs are interchangeable.

steering stem.

brakes.

shocks.

Thats all I can think of at the moment.

the frames are differnt on 400ex from 05 and up I beleive, I could be wrong.

I know the 00-04 are the same.

If you ask that in the 400ex section here someone will answer that really quick!

Didn't realize you.were in ireland i sold a 250r overseas for bigggg money compared to what id get here in the states
400ex is another good starter frame and should be easily accessible i was never a yfz fan so im not sure what is good that route

What i'm just woundering is if you threw out all the junk like the stock engine with the starter, battery wiring loom ect and all the heavy stock parts like the a arms, swinger and sub-frame (i have read that they are all way heaver then after market parts) and put a 250f engine it would it still feel heavy to ride or would it feel totally striped out and light?

well since you brought it up...lol.

I have a 400ex/cr250r hybrid

The 250r motor is nice, but stock is only like 39hp, because its a old school 2 stroke design.

I went with a cr250 motor, it has 45hp stock and only weighs 45ish pounds, the original 400ex motor weighed 100 pounds!!!!

250r is good but outdated, the newer 2 strokes is where its at, or a crf 450r motor.

400ex is the way to go. i did a 400ex/trx250r hybrid. the geometry is very close to a 250r and is lighter and stronger. plus, as the fellas stated. parts are very inexpensive.

Thing it my dad has his mind totally set on an LTR, but i just want something that will kick *** round the track i dont really care what it is. But wouldn't it be a hell of alot lighter with the stock engine gone and most of the heavy stock components replaced? would it be enough?

We built this for Clay last year, 07 LTR450 roller with an 07 KX250f motor, fairly simple fit, cut the bends apart on the stock exhaust and re-welded them so it would come out the back just like the 450. It is true that the LTR's are heavy but they also have arguably the best frame geometry, they don't ride heavy, and when you remove the battery, starter, oil tank, wiring harness, etc. they are a lot lighter. We have never weighed it but it feels fairly light when you pick it up and Clay says it is way lighter than the 450. This thing is a blast to ride and will hold it's own in the 450 class. Good luck with whatever you do. Here is the link to some pictures on photo-bucket, you might check out the blaster on there as well. http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/redline121/library/LTR250f

just to give you an idea:

right now with my ltr/crf hybrid i'm right around 375lbs with fluids and an oversized radiator. I could get it down to 350 fairly easily if I used an aftermarket swinger, axle, hubs, carrier, subframe, and 2ply tires.
