I have my bike torn all the way down chasing a noise i have. at idle it makes like a bearing noise and when i pull in the clutch it goes away and ive been finding metal shavings in the oil. I believe it to be a bearing but they all check out good so far. But i noticed that the counter shaft is rubbing on the left hand side case which my guess is where the shavings are coming from. my question is how much play is the shaft supposed to have if any?in all directions back and forth and side to side.

If it were a 450 Id say it was crank bearings. I still say even tho it is a 400ex that its probably the bearings.

What color are the shavings, brass colored? If so thats the crank.

I recall (and dont quote me its been awhile since I remember this) the crank should have a bit side to side play but not alot, but it should have ZERO up/down play.
