I need a new bearing carrier for my 01 400ex. I am looking at the Magnum carriers made by Rad and was wondering what I should go with. The H-10 twin row bearings or the H-12 with the tapered bearings for a little extra $. What are the pro's/con's of each. Thanks in advance for any input.

Twin row or tapered, doesnt really matter.

All the bearings in the carriers are the same no matter what the name brand is.

All Im saying is, you could spend $200-$300 on a carrier to say you have that brand and hope it really is better, or you could go to ebay and buy a $100 brand new carrier with the same bearings that the $200 carrier has.

To answer your question about the pros and cons of tapered or twin row, anyone can say that one is better then the other.

If I put both brands/types on my quad and they both lasted roughly 4 years, how could you tell which is better? In that case I would prefer the cheaper one.

About the bearings, every bearing on a 400ex is available at any bearing supply store, whatever you do DONT tell them its for a ATV or dirtbike, They WILL NOT sell you the bearing "maybe" but not likely. Some people wont sell it to you so that they will have no lability if the bearing fails.

Ive been through that with bearings shops, exhaust shops, shock suppliers, even fabric suppliers in my area, its very weird and dumb if you ask me.

Try looking up bearing suppliers in your area, you might get lucky and save some money.

I appreciate your input JOHNDOE83. I can buy a Lonestar carrier on Ebay new for $120. The Rad carrier runs $160 after shipping on there as well. The thing I really liked about the Rad carrier is the external grease zerk.

I would deff spend between $100-$160 and for the extra zerk its really not a bad deal.

LSR is a very good carrier also, I remember from the past their warranty's are actually really good also.

I went ahead and ordered a carrier so I can get the rear end put back together this week. I went with the Rad twin row and actually got it for $149.99 after shipping which I thought was a pretty good deal. I would have gone with the LSR but for an extra $25-30 bucks I figured I might as well get the external grease zerk. Thanks guys

East coast atv, cheapest around and best value for the money.

I agree, a bearing supply has the bearings very cheap. Also, a GMC 5.7L V8 from 1998 silverado is the twin row bearing-15 bucks online.

You might need to drill a acess hole for the zerk to be used properly.

My original 400ex swingarm had been drilled and pluged and had the carrier with the zerk fitting.

I can possibly find a picture if you need it.

I've heard of people doing this to access the grease zerk when it is located on the center of the carrier (inside the swing arm) so they don't have to take the rear end apart to grease the carrier. The Rad carrier I ordered has the grease zerk outside the swingarm next to the sprocket. Here is a picture.

Yeah, that was my main attraction to them. Sure beats the heck out of having to take everything apart to greese the carrier or as you mentioned making an access hole in the swingarm.

Just don't forget to take the little fitting out after greasing. Now, I know it sounds silly but we can all agree that you thinks it a great idea to grease the carrier before going riding, then you're in a rush and forget to take it out.. snap it off on a log, rock, etc.... then you have to drill it out blah blah blah... ya.. i've been there.. however the external zirc is a gift to mankind..

The rad carrier was the first thing I did to my 400 in early 07. I bought the taper bearing one. Other than when I put my dominator axle in it 4 years ago, it has never been apart. I just grease it up every once in awhile and make sure the axle nut is tight. My stock bearings only lasted about 2 months. This think has been going strong ever since.
