When replacing the rings on a piston or putting a new piston and rings in, is the best way to gap them..... Put ring in the cylinder, filler guage the gap then take out and file the ring to the specs provided with piston?

That is correct. Make sure you push the piston up against the rings when they are in the bore to ensure the rings are perfectly square. It may not look like it, but even when the rings appear to be level from side to side they can be off.

So i push the piston in up against the rings and move the rings down a little to ensure alignment. Then you use your feeler gauge and grind to the provided spec.
