question about startbutton

I'm trying to clean up my bars a little. i unhooked the lights and i don't need the start/kill button anymore cause i have a pro design killswitch. i heard you can use a yz 250 killswitch as a 400ex start button? anyone ever done it before? let me know

I havent done this mod but a kill switch "button" works by connecting a ground that kills the motor when the button is pushed, so to make it work as a start button all you have to do is connect it to the start button wires, you shouldnt need to do anything else.

That way when you push the "kill" button it will connect the starter and make it start just like the start button does.

yeah thats what i was told but i wanted to see if anyone on here has done it. My old 440 had it done, but it was a cr type killswitch. Thanks man

pretty sure anyone of them will work I cant remember the exact one I purchased, it all depends on the style you want I like that style. it has held up great and works great. They all wire in the same so you need to just see what style you like best. I'd go with that one

I used the same thing on mine. It was off a sx ktm I think. I got mine for 5.00 with free shipping off ebay but I searched for a few months.

I just cut my switch off the bottom of the control box, mounted a switch under the seat. :D

All you need is a normally-open killswitch. Be careful though as some are closed.

I used wire connectors lol.. I installed one on my 440. It was simple just follow the wires from the start button and wire them together. Works mint 👌

That's what I was thinking and then mount it under my fenders somewhere. I rarely use my lights so they're not needed!

Or you could get THIS (http://www.trailtech.net/3600-PWH.html) and have start and headlights on one switch. Looks much better than the stock one.

Thanks for this link. Haven't bumped into that option. I would get the separate start button because I use the high beam to turn on my fan and low beam or off if I don't want the fan. Not sure how it would wire up but it should only take a few minutes with a test light to figure out. Not sure about the kill switch though. Maybe just pop the clutch to stall it. Hmm, have to think about that one.

I just use the key on mine to shut it off. I understand some/most people remove the key.

for now, while I have stock plastics.. yes.. I plan on tieing in a on off switch for my lights and sticking under my fenders on my frame or something

Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread, but right now I'm putting on a quadtech hood, taking my light switch and clutch off and replacing them with the killswitch starter button, and a new clutch lever and perch and I was wondering where the harness splits off and goes to the starter and some other things in the back, if I can just cut the ones that aren't going to the starter?

Nevermind, I figured it out, you need to do it by the way, it cleans the bars up unbelievably. It's sweet lookin too
