If one were to install a Hinson basket is anything els needed? I thought I heard at some point there was something neede for kick start clearance? Also just to clear up I will be fine adding this and still using my oem inner hub and pressure plate correct?

What you'll need to do, that basket is shaped different than the OEM basket, right on the bottom corner next to the big clutch gear & you'll need to champher the edge of the small gear bolted on the crank to keep it from digging into the bottom of that Hinson basket.
Just do a mock up & you'll see what I'm saying.
Most just take that gear & bench grind one edge to clear the basket.

Everything else about the Hinson basket is the same, so all the other OEM clutch stuff will go right in.

Does the big gear attached to the basket come with it when you buy it? How is the gear attached to the basket?

You need to reuse the big gear off of the OEM basket. It is held onto the hinson basket with an included ring and small hex screws. I believe you also need to reuse the OEM rubber bushings that isolate the big gear from the basket. If you have the later 88-89 primary drive gear no chamfering is necessary as it is thinner at the teeth than the 85-87 gear.

How do I go about getting the big gear off of the basket?? http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd493/jakes2c/EB6B9F2C-6A41-4CD5-8EA8-656F6B6B7C32-2545-000004C3A7831A22_zpsf3dc1a3f.jpg

Also how can I tell which year primary gear I have? It may be self explanatory once I look at it but I have not received my Hinson yet.

You need to grind the heads of the rivets off to remove the retaining plate, gear and rubber bushings (under the plate).

Looking at your gear it looks like the thicker 85-87 gear.

Here is an 85-87 gear (0.580" thick) on the left and an 88-89 on the right (0.513" thick). Notice how the thicker gear has been chamfered for a hinson basket.

I assume you are talking about modifying the gear? Like Neil said the easiet would be to do it on a grinder. You just have to grind about a 45 deg chamfer on the front side of the gear so the tooth thickness is ~.518" and double check it doesn't make contact with the Hinson basket when mounted.

Once you go through the process, of grinding off the heads of those rivets that hold the clutch basket together, grinding the edges of those teeth on that small crank gear, you'll be amazed how easy it all was to do.

Most will use a 4 or 4 1/2" side grinder to grind the heads of those rivets off on the clutch basket & then a bench grinder for the teeth on that small crank gear.

Pay "attention" to how everything is together on the clutch basket, each piece, lay it out like it came apart, so you'll put it back together like its suppose to be.

Ok I will take my time in doing so. It just makes me nervous grinding that gear I'm just afraid of screwing it up or getting somyhin out of balance if thats possible, but hopfully it will be a breeze. It's kinda hard to see from the picture but do I just grind the outer surface of the gear making it thinner or do I have to grind in between each tooth? I assum not between teeth but wanna make sure. Thanks guys

Look at that second pic, see that small gear bolted in place.
If you look close you can see that gear is beveled a small amount right on the very ends of the teeth, grind each tooth just like that just a little bit more.

Once you get every thing changed over, you can sit that small gear & clutch basket back on their shafts & can see how close they are to each other.
It might be that small amount of bevel already on the small gear, may be enough to clear the new Hinson basket, but just for safety sake, grind it just a bit more because of play in the baskets.

Like Neil said, it will be easy once you look at it. Just try to grind evenly, and not more than you need. As long as you take your time, it will be okay, it doesn't have to be exact to 0.001 inches or anything.

I know what you're thinking, and yes, it would be possible to throw it out of balance. But honestly, no engine is ever balanced perfectly anyways, especially a single-piston engine, so as long as you take your time and try to make it all even, the slight imbalance you might create is really small compared to the rest of the imbalance already in the system.

You're worried, but trust me, it's not THAT critical, you can easily do it yourself.

Well i got my basket yesterday and got it all put together. I still have to grind the gear but as far as the basket went it was very simple. I'm goin to post a few pics just in case somebody els wants to do this they can see that there reslly isn't anything to it.

Grinding the rivets off the oem basket

Pull the plate off then you can access the big gear and rubber cushions which are reused
