Ok, many of you know my 426 from this forum. I was going to part it out butt decided to keep it and just build it more. I am going to start off this week by showing you a picture of what it looked like before and a couple parts I have purchased. I will later show you the motor, PC'ed frame and other parts getting added and than a finished product. I will post pics as often as possible.:D

you planning on getting new plastics/ color scheme or just doing a mechanical makeover?

...and i really like that exhaust...

Not being smart but do you know what billet actually is. Billet is a single piece of material. Its not a type of metal. It can be billet steel, billet aluminum, billet titanium. Just giving some advice when you said its all billet, the aftermarket clamps are usually made out of a billet blank.

I got one identical to the 6-5 design one billet and all for 50 bux from east coast atv...guess its just the names you buy.

guess I expect everyone too know its billet aluminum.... And the plastics are pretty much new I purchased them brand new from honda and only have maybe 5 rides on them. The frame is getting matched too the honda yellow, subframe is gloss black, I also did little things like rear hubs, other side cover of the motor, cleaned the center case, upper a arms will be yellow, got a JB stem thats gloss blk and more.... and yes in most cases you do pay for name, I cold run other companys butt I choose too run JB, Houser, SIX5 ect. bike should be pretty spotless when its complete. just a little touch up i guess.

I dont think that onyone seems to understand that when you make 5,000 parts at one time they are going to be cheaper than if you make 5 parts. Jake at Six5Designs makes everything in house and by himself. Hes not going to make a clamp and then lose money on it when he sells it, that dosent make sense. He gets them anodized and his logo cut into them and the killswitch mount is removeable, which i thought was pretty cool. Support local companies guys.

Some of you guys tear the whole quad down, have parts powder coated, and all put back together faster than it took me just to install my 450R carb LOL. I don't have a lot of time for my hobby with 4 kids who all play multiple sports but the time I do get wrenching and riding my quads is better than playing golf or boating or Harley's like most of the guys I work with.

Cant wait to see it together. Not a fan of yellow/black but tie it all in with the frame, subframe , hood, and small stuff, its going to be sweet. Where do you ride that yellow PC is going to last and keep looking good?

Couple questions and feedback. Let me know how you like the Sparks. I got one and havent ridden with it yet. Im putting a super quiet insert and spark arrestor for trail riding and hope it doesnt rob too much performance but i know its going to effect it some. Going to jet it with and without the inserts so i can go to a couple spots with it wide open. I put it on with the bike on a stand and it sounded nice, but the packing it blown and that was also without the inserts.

What size arms are those? I absolutely love those shocks and shock guards. They are just sick.

What is in your a arm grease zerk holes? Plugs?

Also, im sure you already know, but the 250x clutch cable is way longer and gets it away from the exhaust.

And why did you prefer the front nerf mounts up high? I have mine currently resting on the lower frame tube, but curious what benefit up higher has. Im in the process of my build too so i want to weld my tubes on before im done. I cant do PC this year but im going to try and match some shade of gray on spots. Also, a pic later of the nerfs from the side to see how they sit.

Ill be starting my build thread soon, probably just take a bunch of pics throughout the build and put together a thread after im done.

I will update on the carb and sparks once it is up and running, the front shocks are axis and the a-arms are houser sli-cast +3 and yes the shock mounts are bad ***! the nerf bars are 450r nerf's so I had no choice butt to weld them where they are in order to get them to be level. Yes those are plugs for the grease fittings. I will continue updating as I go, I love the feedback!

What exactly are the plugs? Did they come with them?

Pics and details of the nerfs for others to do the same would be great. Do the 450r nerfs use 400ex or 450r pro pegs at the OEM peg mount? And did your nerfs come with the mounts? Might be in another thread but never search for it.

Also, do tell on your jetting. What filter do you run? And is that a 450r rear grab bar? I like the ez-lift 450r walsh or rath i saw ion another thread. I want to do that as well.

And last, i know im asking too many questions. You didnt want to gussett the frame before PC? I only ask because i want to gussett mine before PC. The set X-tech sells is nice. I broke a couple 250r frames, i know they are almost 3 decades old but i figure its insurance so i dont have to strip PC if it happens later. How much you into PC? Around me im looking at least $350 or more depending on how many odds and ends i do.

WOW that yellow and black is looking SHARP!!!

I also love that your using good name brand aftermarket parts, this build is gonna be one of the nicer homemade quads to ever see this forum.

My 400ex was yellow when I first got it, I had yellow neon lights under the frame and over the motor for late night rides, yours would look AWESOME with yellow under lights.

Maybe even a strobe light:D

The nerfs and pegs are 450r, my brother and I cut the front out and just welded it up as you see. was not hard really. Yes, thats a 450r grab. I run a K&N air filter butt UNI is fine too just not alot of room in the air box sense it holds the battery and all. I will update on the carb asap. I decided not too do the frame just because I have never had a problem with the 400ex frame cracking and I am about 360.00 into powder with all the odd and ends. He layed it on thick so it should last a long time I hope. I will only ride it on the track.

While waiting for the adapter you could sand the ridges off the 450R carb if you haven't done it already. You also will want to take that airboot off and sand the end where it slides over the carb adapter. I sanded my airboot so it is smooth inside back about an inch and it slides onto the adapter all the way.

Man that quad looks beautiful. I enjoy reading these builds but am amazed that some people spend so much time and money making them look so nice when they will never look the same after just a couple rides. Very nice!

hey, I have the bike running and all together. Just waiting on my ressi clamps. My brother had made me a adapter for my 400/450 carb. So that means I am stuck with a brand new Aluminum one from zrpilot. I have not even received it yet butt ill sell it once it comes in for the same price as I payed... 55.00 pm me if interested!

OK, My bro made a plastic adaptor at work. Here is a pic of the adaptor and some of the grinding we did to make it fit nice and snug. Also some cell pics with it all together I will post better pics with it in a nice area and lots of light. I for sure need some nice wheels to go with it and minor things to finish it up. Enjoy and comment!

Looks great! What brand of plastics are those? I personally never cared for a graphics kit because I don't really care about the "looks" of them. But the next time I have brand new plastics I may go ahead and install a graphics kit because it helps protect the plastic and keep them from getting all scratched up.

Have yu ridden it enough to be able to tell if the 450R carb showed much improvement?

426kidz
02-18-2013, 11:48 AM
They are brand new OEM plastics, I haven't ridden it much at all. BUT I have rode a couple before and after the mod and it really is a great upgrade and you can Forsure tell a difference.

Nice! Can't wait for the pics.

When I had my seat covers put on I talked to the guy about putting in a hump and he said it was definitely doable I would just have to buy a little foam and he said he could get the covers to stretch around the hump. I guess I should also note that it was done by a little old man who runs a furniture upholstery shop. He only charged me $10 a seat to put the covers on too. Had him do it because I didn't have a staple gun that would fit in those tight areas. Didn't do it then because it was already too late and he had put the covers on.

Recently found a nice set of nacs graphics with a seat cover so he might get a chance to finally build that hump for me after all. There will be 2 of us! lol

Hey man, awesome looking restoration! I'm about to get a 2002 Honda 400EX and restore it as well. So on the hood, did you just use the normal plastics and take the lights out and then the hood went right over it or did you have to get different front fenders that didn't have the hole for the lights in order for the hood to fit well?

426kidz
03-08-2013, 11:14 AM
Those are stock fenders. You take the light out and cut the bracket than lay the hood on and trip it out good than mark where your holes will go than just put tabs in an your done! Thanks

03-08-2013, 12:33 PM
Alright great. Would they fit the same with Maier fenders, do you know?

Zhutch7

Also where did you get your hood? I can't find them anywhere hardly.

426kidz
03-08-2013, 12:51 PM
Well, I sold my quadtech too a member on here. Than I purchased fourwerx carbons last one. I think you have to have a minimum of 10 made in order for him to even make them again. Pretty hard to find a nice quadtech hood. And I don't like the miars or any other brand.

I haven't used one on other plastics but I have seen them before so yeah I don't see why it wouldn't fit.

Zhutch7

Well I am little late on this whole process it sounds like. I think I am going to buy stock fenders and try to find a Quadtech or Fourwerx hood somewhere. And powder coat the heck out of the wheeler. My dad and I powder coat quite a bit. He has his own business. So I will say that I have pretty good access to the goods! :D

03-08-2013, 01:01 PM
yeah, your best bet is to get stock plastics and than find a nice hood, CJM is selling a nice 450r carb and adaptor also. That will be a good upgrade. Not sure how built your bike is tho

Zhutch7
03-08-2013, 01:08 PM
I will have to look into that. I appreciate it man. If you have any info where I could get a hood like the one you had give me a shout if you would. And did you buy your last hood off line somewhere?

I'd like to know if you feel a difference between the two exhausts.

426kidz
03-22-2013, 03:54 PM
Yes, There is a nice increase in sound and performance. The HMF was good butt the Sparks is much more aggressive.I feel the most gain top end but there is still a medium gain bottom end. Overall I love the system. With all the work I have done to the bike the exhaust really took it to the right level with performance, sound and looks. great package and I wouldn't trade it for anything else.

Oh yeah! When I got this quad it was trashed. Spray painted plastic, frame, you name it and it was probably spray painted. Rear tires had plugs in them, cracked plastic, seat foam torn up, etc. Got it for $600 and a gun trade lol. It does have some goodies on it tho that will save me hundreds $$$. Yeah you have a slick quad man. If you lived closer we could hook ya up with some Powder coating. We have our own business. Hutch's Powder Coating
