Ever since I got my 99 400ex, I've had a really hard time getting it to start when it's cold (sub 40*). I thought since I had aftermarket CDI boxes (2 different ones) and carbs (4 different ones now), that it was something along those lines. Last weekend I noticed that it wasn't starting in gear even with the clutch pulled (although that switch has been bypassed). In neutral it was start so long as it was warm (IE sitting in a heated trailer). After some service manual studying and checking several connections, I decided to try running a wire from the aux. ground (by battery) to ground (I used the volt reg. mounting bolt). That fixed all my problems and the quad runs noticeably better. I suspect there's a bad ground elsewhere on it that I can't find, but this band-aid seems to be working very well! Just thought I'd share this discovery.
