you shouldnt need to run any different octane, and it should your mileage too much depending on what cam profile you choose. if you pick a big lopy cam that requires you to wind that motor out more i can see it changing your mileage a little because you will need to floor it everywhere to get going. i put some big comps in my car and the thing is a dog until about 3500 rpms then it comes alive. if you put a big cam in your truck then you probably should look into changing the gears so that your bottom end doesnt suck too much. but gears are also going to kill your fuel economy on the highway.

the best thing to do if you want to have a race truck is have another truck for a daily driver.

It will hurt your fuel economy. But who cares your making more power. Also remember if you have an automatic transmission your going to need a higher stall converter

Still disagree. Know tons of people with hot rods and trucks. No one gets that kind of mpg

agreed, I dont think you'd pull 16mpg average with that setup in a car, much less a truck on 35's with 3:73's...isnt an sm465 a 4-speed? if so then theirs just no way.

lol.realized i put the wrong ratio for the rear.my other truck used to have 3:73 but the one listed has 3:42.used to drive it back and forth to boston from connecticut.yes,it got 16 as built as it is.the sm465 is a three speed with the granny low for 1st and doing 65-70 i got that mpg.now she sits in the garage waitlig for a sunny day !!!!!!!!!!! wish i could figure out how to post a pic.lol

I bet its under 10 mpg

chris p.

ok then.my big block 70 camaro gets around 10 with a reverse manual valve body t-400 and 4:10's and a 28" tire and a 2,800 stall.if you can keep your foot out of them then the mpg is obtainable but obviously it's hard to do....and besides, with cam2 being over $10 a gallon you have to go easy.lol

i got 25mpg in my stang being stock, and now i have comp 278 cams, 373s, lt headers, no cats, borla catback, no egr, rerouted pcv(so it doesnt dump back into the engine) sct tuner(base tune yet to be refined) and a bunch of other jazz, and i get 22mpg now which i didnt think was too bad.

I've had all sorts of different vehicles, S10's with V-8, s10 with four cylinders, cars with V-8's, cars with four cylinders, full trucks with V-8's trucks with six cylinders. Ive driven them hard and easy. I know what kind of fuel economy these get. On top of all of this I'm a mechanic, I've worked on Chevelle's, Corvettes, old trucks, brand-new trucks, mustangs, Camaros, Civics. I know what kind of fuel economy cars get. I also know how to properly calculate fuel economy.

rough estimate is to top it off the drive then top it off again and divide how many miles you went by how many gallons you put in im somewhere at 15 in my silverado and 13 with my dad driving and 17 in my blazer

That's better than a rough estimate if your mileage is accurate. But after you change tire size, gears etc.....if not properly calibrated, those are nothing but false numbers.
