I shyed away from powerstrokes when shopping, most stock 7.3s were getting 19, the duramaxs were a bit overpriced (for me),

So i went with the cummins, the power is something i didnt expect, great fuel milage, and 270k miles and counting.

Ater the head gaskets went south on my Duramax last spring, I got the truck back and was surprised to see somewhat better fuel mileage. Pulling a loaded 20ft enclosed, I was in the 11-12 range on the highway, about a 1-1.5 mpg improvement. Around town I get about 13 mpg, on the highway unloaded about 18-20, depending on how hard I drive it. This is based on checking mpg by fillups and miles driven, not the in-dash computer. A good buddy of mine has been a heavy duty diesel mechanic for over twenty years and also owns a Duramax, he claims that the improved mileage is the result of the valves being properly set when the motor was reassembled, apparently Duramax's are very sensitive to improperly adjusted valves and fuel mileage will suffer.

You're vs Your.... Why is it so hard? :o

I love my Cummins and I get about 19 around town and roughly 21 highway. Power is great, I pull on my buddies RX8 with just an Edge JWA and 4" straight pipe. I love the Dmax's, but they're too pricey. Paid $11,000 for my '02 and couldn't be happier.

I was scared to click on this thread thinking i would end up aggravated at ppls respnses. So with that being said im glad to see some honest answers....I hate when the diesel threads turn into unknowledgable diesel ppl saying they pull 25,000 pounds everyday and get 23MPG doing it haha. If going for an older truck i would go for a 7.3 powerstroke. Ive owned 6.0s and they are a fuel hog. Dads always been a 7.3 guy and i cant knock them. Reliable, decent on fuel and honestly all the power you NEED. A duramax does seem to be the fuel saver of diesels but yes ppl stil lwant top dollar for even the old 01/02 D-max's. A cummins is an awesome engine and im sorry if i offend anyone here but my personal opinion i wouldnt own one. Not for the engine cause ill repeat the cummins is one of the best engines out there but they shoulda put them in a different body and drivetrain

05 cummins- with straight pipe, a chip, and intake you could probably get 22 Highway

Txted my buddy with an 03 says he got 20 depending on how he drove, said that was stock, on his 05 6 speed he was able to get 21 with a smarty.

With my 12 valve it all depends on the way I drive it.

But Go test drive it! See if you like it.

the 03+ straight piped cr's send goosebumps on me when I hear them :D amazing!

Like blacknblue#2 said, I also was scared to click on this thread, I have a 2006 cummins with a super chip and 4" open exhuast. I get about 14-16 towing and about 18-19 empty.

I had a 2001 7.3 with the same setup and it would do about the same.

These peopel claiming to get 24+ are not telling you the truth, I've owned all three and none of them get that kind of millage. Most likely they are going off thier on dash computers and not calculating it themselves.

I average around 15 city and 18-20 highway all while pushing over 600rwhp now. I'll be going to a single 75 or 80mm with some pretty big injectors in a few months here so mileage will probably be a little worse, but shooting for 800rwhp now. This is out of a lifted 2010 f250 ccsb 6.4 on 35's. My 08 ecsb did a little better mileage wise but wasn't lifted nor running as big as a wheel/tire.

I had an 03 F250 with the 6.0 Powerstroke. It was straight piped, with an Edge w/ Attitude. I was getting around 18.5mpg on the highway and 16ish in the city. With a 7k trailer it was around 12-13mph, but it was a mix of city/open road. Once winter hit & the temps went to 0 degrees, I was running the truck for 10 minutes prior to driving. Mileage dropped to 12.5-14 because I would sit to let it warm up and cool down.

Power was great, but I don't know if I would buy a 6.0 again. I had to replace the injectors (6 total).

My friend had an 06 Cummins w/ AFE Stage 2 intake, Magnaflow "cool duals" exhaust w/o cats, & a Bully dog on the mileage setting. He was getting around 15ish city and close to 19 on the highway. His drive to work was only 7 miles, so the truck was almost never fully warmed up or driven far. He did smoke the transmission from running Crazy Larry (program for the Bully dog) too much. $7500 later he had a billet transmission.

You can't beat the power and fuel economy of a diesel. I drive almost 100 miles every day to work and back: my fuel bill was just about $900 a month! I had to opt for a little puddle jumping Kia to afford everything else.

I know it's not a Duramax, Cummins, or Powerstroke, but for what it's worth, I have a 1998 Silverado K2500 with a 6.5 Turbo Diesel. Truck is stock with a 3" downpipe to 4" straight pipe exhaust. Doesn't have the power that the newer diesels have, but I get 18-20 mpg driving back and forth to work and 14 mpg towing a 28' enclosed trailer at 65 mph.

Bully dogs have a tendency to cause Tranny issues but most of all fry tcm's. I'll never understand why guys pay tens of thousands of dollars for these trucks and put garbage tuning on them. Custom tuning is the way to go for any diesel

^ ill have to agree with these guys. id never put a cookie cutter tune in my trucks. even though my 97 has an edge in it, and i have no idea what tune. but that came in the truck and the tuner was not included:p
