i am thinking of an aluminum air box on my stock base engine '05 400ex. what are some pros & cons.

Unless you want to move the battery and wiring into it, it really serves no real purpose otherwise.

It also makes the seat easier to be put on :D

As CJM stated, it's only significant purpose is to relocate the battery and wiring and get them out of the elements. I run one from cfm because of just that. I don't believe that there's added performance advantage to the box.

is there generally enough wire length to relocate things into the airbox or does everything have to be lengthened? thanks

It will all go in, no major mods or lengthening req..
