Hey Guys,
I know this is probably a worn subject, but I would like everyone's input on 400EX or 450r. I currently have a 08 400EX with the upgrades in my sig, but am considering buying a 450r. I currently do really well in my local harescramble series, but want to try out GNCC. Before I go and spend a fortune on my suspension on my 400, I'd really like to think it through. Thanks in advanced for your input!

Either way you go, suspension would be a must. The only real difference after that is the engine.

The 400's have smooth tractable power that you can ride all day. 450's can have explosive power and at times it can become a liability.

Honestly, having both a 450 and an EX, they both have their moments. In tight technical stuff, I don't think the EX is any slower than my 450 and I actually prefer the 400 in those situations. However, once things open up it's all 450.

Another thing to consider is what class do you want to race? Most racing that is through the ATVA/AMA have a 400cc class that you can race your EX in as long as it's stock bore. If that isn't offered and it's more open style racing, which 450 you want should be your only choice.

ish is right. Suspension is a must, very least +1 arms with good revalved 450r shocks, elkas, works, or whatever. Then a long travel setup like the GT Thunder setup for the rear.

The only time a 450r can out edge you is in the open areas. They have more power. But in tight stuff the 400ex will shine b/c it can lug aroundin gear and a 450 cant. Also they arent that much faster in the tight stuff b/c of said explosive power. Many guys I ride with still ride the 400 and keep up just fine.

Thanks! Yep that's what I pretty well figured with the 400 being better in the technical stuff. Looks like I'll be calling up GTT! :D

For racing.. 450 all the way.

My opinion.

If you are a beast, I mean like Marshal Going's beast... Then you will get to A class on a 400ex.. Around here anyways.

But the 400ex vs the 450 isn't even really a competition.

The 450 holds up better to racing I think.

I break plastic mounts, every time I go riding pretty much.

I am a fairly small guy.. About 5'9" and around 145 pounds. And the 400 is a little cramped when you have your butt between the front and rear fender in a turn.

Then you get on a 450 and you have a lot more room.

The options are a lot better for a 450 also.

Like Suspension work.. You don't have to buy $200 front shocks.. then have then pay to have them redone for you.

Idk.. I guess just from my point of view.. As far as racing goes.. the 450 over the 400 every day of the week.

Having that extra snappy torque helps a lot more than it hurts you in my opinion.

I have a 07 400ex , and just bought a 2011 yfz450x a couple months ago. They both have their pros and cons. 400 are great for tight and technical trails, but when it opens up in the field sections the 450s will pull on the 400. Suspension is the most important upgrade for the 400.
I wouldnt dump alot of money into a 400, Id rather put that money into a 450. I was in the same spot as you debating on whether to build my 400 or buy a new 450 , I went for the 450 and havent looked back. Coming from someone who has both id go for the 450 if you plan on getting serious into racing, if not a 400 is a great reliable machine to have fun with your buddies on the weekend
