doe's anyone know why the 3rd gear goes bad and what exactly happens , what needs to be replaced?

thanks but that link was about the shift pin relocater not 3rd gear.

depending on your year and riding stile, they go bad because you tend to use 3rd gear the most, and the cogs are considered small. I have an '06 and they lasted over 4 years. I could have ran them more, but there started to chip, and I had the case apart, so I replace both 3rd gears in the tranny. You can get a stock set for about $100 I think?
I know that I can run most MX tracks and either lug or over rev 3rd gear and not shift as much, but it stresses the gear out.
